I can't help but be reminded of High Chancellor Adam Sutler in V for Vendetta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta_(film)) and Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palpatine) from Star Wars.

I would have suggested to have a Look at Ron Paul for the 2008 election (http://www.ronpaul2008.com) - read some of his writings here (http://www.ronpaullibrary.org/). But the way this new directive is going, there might not even be an election in 2008. Of course, time will tell. But it's disconcerting nonetheless.
