Co-founder of Facebook, Justin Moskovitz, declared a couple of days ago that email is about to die (http://boingboing.net/2014/01/21/email-dead-again.html).
Mark Zuckerberg also declared (in 2011) that email was dead (http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/nov/27/john-naughton-mark-zuckerberg-email).
The Wall Street Journal declared (in 2009) that "email's reign is over" (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052970203803904574431151489408372). But...
That's all "horse-stuff"...!
According to some recent research, for marketing purposes, email is "40 times more effective than Facebook and Twitter" (http://www.prdaily.com/Main/Articles/Email_40_times_more_effective_than_Facebook_and_Tw _15924.aspx)...
So... from the looks of it, you shouldn't abandon email yet!
Best wishes,
Dien
