Gary Halbert has a ton of great information on his site concerning newspaper advertising. There are samples there and information involving split runs; when to advertise; what section to advertise in; how to get people to respond; etc...

Marketing legend Melvin Powers also has a great book on classified advertising that you can find on Amazon for less than $10.

The same classified principles that work in newspapers work on Craigslist... ;)

Ankesh, I hate to disagree with you on columms but 1 inch by 1.833 inches is 1 inch high. Column widths arte the variable.
They depend on how many columns for the specific paper and whether it is a full size or tabloid size.

He didn't write: 1 inch by 1.833 inches

I'm pretty sure that column = width.

(But I do realize that 1.83 inch in height is a bit out-of-the-place... so maybe I read something wrong...)
