All Your Base Are Belong To Us!

Take off your zig

Hi!

Thanks for the excellent belly laugh!! I haven't laughed that hard in ages.

BTW, as I know from considerable experience doing photo retouching, each of those pictures probably took more than an hour to create--some of them, I'm sure, took many hours to tweak to perfection. I vote for that movie for an Oscar!

Thanks again!

How a fad takes off....

Hi Boyd!

I see you're already aware of it... You're a pretty "plugged in" fellow to what's going on online.... :)

You can find this Flash file, along with the phrase "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" on an increasing number of web pages! It's growing.... (Do a search for the phrase to see for yourself!)

Remember the Hampsterdance? It's that kind of thing.... :)

How do these fads start?

I found the origin.... It started on a discussion forum for the game Tribes....

I've linked to it below, for those who like to know about these things, how do fads start and how do they spread...

If you go to the Tribes forum linked to below, you'll see that in December, a guy named "Bad_CRC" created a little animated GIF file, with screen shots taken from an old video game (with bad English translation), called "Zero Wing"....

From there, he started creating altered images, with the phrase "All Your Base Are Belong To Us". And others got into the act too....

Before long, there were hundreds of these altered images, with "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" over them.... If you look at that thread in the "Tribes" forum, it goes for 96 pages!

Others got into the act. It spread beyond that Tribes forum, and outside....

From there, Bad_CRC made a Flash movie, combining the opening scenes from this video game, along with these altered images, and a sound track... Which many found hilarious!

And it's kept on spreading... :)

Here in Australia (and probably lots of other places), the Hampsterdance song has made it into the music charts....

I don't know if "Bad_CRC" has profited from the fad he has created yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if we'll see the "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" song becoming a music hit too! I've heard that some people already play it at dance parties....

:)

(Don't forget the link below....)

All Your Base Are Belong To Us... the thread where it began (for those who study fads!)....

Boyd Stone April 5, 2001 08:32 AM

No, I heard about it from you

Hi!

In the other community where I hang out I'd seen messages with the subject 'All your base are belong to us!' but I never opened them, assuming that they were posted by people to whom correct English is a second language.

So I thank you for bringing it to my attention. I've watched it a bunch of times now, with sincere admiration and appreciation. My wife likes it, too. In my earlier message I got it wrong: I should have written "For great justice, take off every zig!"

Thanks also for the link to the Tribe thread. It was quite interesting! As I said before, those retouches are a lot harder to make than they look.

There's a way to get traffic from fads like this. Make a little SWF file with Swish that has a headline and your website URL, and rename it allyourbase.swf and post it on file sharing sites--of course, don't leave yourself open to easy retaliation. Traffic you get like this won't be high quality traffic, of course, but I maintain that traffic is the seed from which all else grows. (I know I differ from many in this internet marketing community in this, though people like Sanford would probably agree. This is the global internet, after all, not a local neighborhood with a small constituency.)

Concerning fads, some time ago I suggested people read the *beautiful* Connie Willis book _Bellwether_. If anyone read it, tell me how you liked it, OK?

Best,

- Boyd

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!

I was going to say, "Now I've seen everything", but I'm sure something else will come along and prove me a liar...!!

After all,

All Your Base are Belong To Us!

BTW, is there a way to save this thing to disk and view it offline? While it is running, I seem to have no options to "save" or "save as". I'm running MSIE 5.5.

Any ideas?

Here's how to save it

Hi!

Click your Start button, then select Find / Files or Folders. Tell it to find allyourbase.swf or *.swf on your local hard drive.

When you see the window showing the found files, right mouse click on allyourbase.swf and select Copy. Then right mouse click on your Desktop and select Paste. The file is now on your desktop.

To play it, just open it with MSIE 5.5.

Best,

- Boyd

Thanks, Boyd! Worked like a charm!

It took a couple of tries (using *.swf is what worked) but I got it going.

"All Your Base are Belong To Us" now belong to me!

That thing is so weird, it's funny!

Is it just me?

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?!

Would not be the first time!

Actually, a great book on Fads is called "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. Excellent study on fads and spreading "Cultural" viruses.

I guess I must be #2 who "doesn't get it"?!

"All your base" DOESN'T "belong to us" in Bullitt County, KY, USA!
