$300 A day business but no idea how to market it
Hi Folks. I am new here and I've spent the past couple of weeks just reading all the insightful posts from members such as Dien Rice, GordonJ, Phil, Sandi Bowman, Skip Rosell, Don Alm, TW, Marty, Ankesh and many others. I want to thank you all for sharing your knowledge. The reason I am posting here is because I need help and I think you all are the right folks who can help me.
Two years ago, I created a balloon distribution business that was earning me upwards of $300 per day every day, but last November, I got into a terrible accident that has disabled me and I can no longer do the work. So I decided to write an ebook about my business and sell it on the Internet. I had someone setup a nice website that was linked to my paypal account and I placed ads on Google, Yahoo, and Facebook to attract customers. I spent $100 to advertise on each site and after my $300 was used up, I had received only 11 orders. Since I was only charging $10 per copy, I only made $110. I received great feedback from the people who bought the book but only 11 people? What am I doing wrong? I know there are a lot of scams out there but how do I convince people when I have a real proven way of making money? I even offered money back guarantee but even that didn't do the trick. Many people on this forum make a living selling information products so I am really hoping you all can shed some light. Thanks -Samir |

Hi Samir, Sorry to hear about your accident. I sell reports on line for the last 6 years. There is a lot that goes into the winners & the losers. But there are a few things that you can do before you spend money to know if you have a winner or loser. Not 100% guaranteed but a way to evaluate the market for your report. PPC is a tough game and if you are new or do not know the ropes you can lose money quickly. Getting 11 sales may be great if you did everything wrong and still made sales. That means there is an interest (hungry crowd) and they are people that are willing to spend money (even if it was $10 bucks) Here are a few things I would look at before I called it a loser. * Keywords---What prospects are you targeting * Ad set up---AIDA Attention, Interest, Desire, Action * Beark even point---On your example you needed to sell it for $27 to break even (there is a lot more to this but not time or room here) * List building---Did you capture names and email? If you did then you can still make sales by email and still break even or better @ the $10 price point. * Sales page---is it converting? If you paid $1.00 per click then you got 300 visitors and converted @ almost 4%. Which is GREAT. But if you paid 5 cent per click then you got 6000 visitors and 11 sales means the conversion rate is really poor. * and at least a hundred other things, You can get most of the information by tracking. After tracking results---You may have a big winner on your hands. If you got the traffic for free you would have a profit of $110 instead of a loss of $190. Not knowing any of your stats it is hard to recommend a plan of action. But I will say this, don't spend any more money on advertising for now. If you can not make it work with free ways you will not make it work with paid ways. 90% of what I sell is with free marketing. I use the 10% paid to find out quickly if I have a winner or loser. If you would like to ask specific questions here or by PM or email just ask away. I will try to help you to the extent of my knowledge. Best of success, Skip Rosell |

Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
For a stand alone product - the price point of $10 is too low. You should price it at $50-100 range. Of course, you also need to make the product good enough to be worth that much.
Don't know how good your salesletter is - or how well did you run the ad campaigns on google and facebook - so can't comment on that. If it was your first time running ads, then I can say with quite some certainty that someone with more experience with PPC will be able to at least half the expenses. But that does not help you now - unless you do have a budget to hire an expert. Before you spend more money on advertising, first try the free route. Research for blogs / newsletters where your prospects hang out. Contact the owner - send him a review copy of your ebook. And ask him to write about it if he likes it. Create an affiliate program to increase your chances of these people reviewing your product and promoting it. |
Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
Thank you for taking time to write back.
Skip, I definitely have a lot to learn. The total number of visitors I received from all three campaigns were 283. I am not even sure if the problem is with my sales copy or the ad because on Facebook, my ads received 187,924 impressions but only 68 clicks. I used two different ads, one said "Earn $300 A day distributing balloons to local businesses" and the other said "Earn extra cash distributing balloons to local businesses" I believe most of my orders came from Google AdWords where my CPC was $0.80. I used hundreds of keywords but only "extra cash" and "earn extra money" performed. I would like to capture emails but I do not have anything else to offer and I don't think it would be right to offer a badly written PLR as gift to people who subscribe. Plus, without paid advertisement, how do I get people to visit my site to begin with? Phil, you're right, a $10 price tag is not going to replace a $300 a day business but the idea is so simple, I am not sure how to twist it into another business model. It doesn't really have any secret formula that I can keep to myself or maybe I am just not smart enough to think of one. The basic premise is that if you make something easier for someone, you will be rewarded. Think about it, why is Apple one of the most successful companies in the world? MP3 players existed before Apple introduced the iPod and smart phones existed before the iPhone was introduced. So what did Apple do different? Well, with the iPod, they made it easy to download music into an MP3 player. With the iPhone, they made it easy to navigate using the touch screen. Convenience stores are another example. They make it easy to buy everyday items, that's why they're so successful and that's why you find one on every corner. People pay for convenience and people pay for ease. My balloon distribution business makes it easy for people to buy a certain type of balloon and it also makes it easy for certain businesses to sell them. I would love to get some feedback on the sales copy. My website is easilydoable dot com. This forum does not let me post links. Thanks -Samir |

Hi Ankesh...I would love to sell it for that price range and I think it's totally worth it for the amount of money you can make from it, but my ebook is only 12 pages long. Does size matter? |

Thanks Dien!

Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
Size matters is the wrong questions. Its all about perception. And packaging.
If you sell 12 pages biz-opp report for $50 - you will face a high refund rate. Because the consumers in this market have set expectations formed by other products they've bought before. But maybe you can repackage things? Bulk up the content and provide 3-4 pdf files. One with the main idea. One with FAQ. One with legal form templates or ad / brochure / cold calling templates. One with success stories / case studies. Or maybe make a video along with the PDF files. If you can't bulk the content up - look for 1 big buyer instead of 100 small ones. Try licensing your report to the balloon sellers - they can give away the report to anyone and everyone. And you earn a royalty per report printed and given away. Or else - try to become a reseller of balloons yourself. Sell the report for $10 and make a loss. But recover that on balloons sold to these guys. (Or maybe sell the report and a box of balloons for $50.) |
Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
Hi Samir,
I bought your report just now and will review it over the weekend when I have some extra time. I have some ideas for your saleletter and will do some research on the best keywords to target. I will also research the right places to do some free advertising for your report. I have a couple of deadlines to meet so I will not get to it until the weekend. If you have some questions that you want me to answer you can drop me a line at [email protected] Best of success, Skip Rosell |

Those are all great ideas Ankesh...I was thinking about bundling up my ebook with a startup kit but that would require me to physically mail out the package and handle returns. I will definltely think about the options you've listed. Thanks for your thoughts.

DO THIS FIRST Samir
Hi Samir,
First CONGRATULATIONS on: 1. Asking for help. You have already received excellent feedback from the rest of the group. 2. Putting something up and marketing it. 11 sales from 283 clicks = 3.8% conversion from "Cold PPC" traffic??? That's seems higher than I would have guessed. So Congratulatons I noticed that you are: 1. Asking for feedback about the Sales Copy and that 2. NOT building a List for FEAR of offering a crappy PLR product and or NOT having anything else to sell?? These Questions you are asking all stem from ONE THING. And NO it is not lack of your knowledge per se. It is THE most important link in the sales chain. A Lack of CLARITY on WHO your TARGET is. SAMIR repeat this 10x's before you go to bed lol "Your TARGETS will dictate your COPY which will dictate the OFFER ." Repeat. "TARGETS dictate COPY dictates OFFER" See A LOT of the Answers to the Sales Copy question and "How do I Improve this?" type questions will NOT be found with us... but they WILL be Found In those 11 People that actually BOUGHT from you. They are buyers. GO BACK to them. GET to know them Better. YOUR SOLUTION to your questions are IN THE TARGETS So do this... 1. GET EXTREMELY CLEAR ON WHO YOUR TARGET IS and The marketplace
Once you are Clear your Salesletter could write itself by offering a Soluton to the Problems/Desires you established by your market research aka. GET CLEAR ON WHO YOUR TARGET is. Action: 1. You could have that paypal button redirect to a Surveymonkey.com survey Lettng them know the report is not ready yet...but that you want to tailor it to their needs. Ask them What's the MOST IMPORTANT question you have about____________? Build a list and then update the report or ADD TO the existing report a FAQ and YES bump up the price. but THAT will come later. GET CLEAR ON YOUR TARGET P.S If you are NOT building a list because of Fear of NOT knowing what to sell next. You are not building a business. You just have ONE product. START BUILDING A LIST NOW! Like RIGHT NOW ...Please. If you don't You gotta go back and INVEST more BUX in PPC every single month. "Hoping to tweak your metrics to profitability. P.P.S I think Gordn Alexander posted something on this in a recent post "The number one problem?" Go back and find it. It will help BEST of success Samir! Quote:

Re: DO THIS FIRST Samir
Excellent post Duane. Thanks.
Minor point. Shouldn't "TARGETS dictate COPY dictates OFFER" be "TARGETS dictate OFFER dictates COPY" instead? Also - to continute the conversation - what all questions would You ask once you have zero-ed in onto the target? What information would you look out for? |
Critique and Free offer
Here's my take on it...from my perspective and and ruling out that I have read all the posts on it here and stepping back and looking from the point of seeing the web site and offer for the first time.
Now this may be harsh...or even sound cruel, but please do not be offended as it is not intended that way. I buy a "lot" of similar products for the purpose of seeing what they are about and judging whether I want to represent them on some of my web sites. After viewing your web site I would not buy your product....But it does have potential. The sales copy really needs redoing as you are aware and the web site really, really is bad...and the price makes me cringe....I would leave the site a non-purchaser. If the product is really that good that one can make that kind of money then it surely warrants a higher price...if it sat at $27 to $47, or even $97...even with the poor web site and sales copy I would probably buy it....but $10 as a regular price and the copy and site the way it is...ouch....even with the guarantee I wouldn't buy. Okay now knowing what I have gleaned from the postings on the forum.... 12 pages is a bit small, but I would much rather pay a decent price for a 12 page "system" that gets right to the point without a whole lot of fluff just to put more size to the product. Time is critical in my life and when I buy a product of 50 -100 pages and after reading it find that it could have been done in 20 pages I get a little perturbed. Notice I used the word system....that word alone just increased the value of the product....it is no longer an eBook or report but a system to make up to $300 a day selling Balloons....you might have to rewrite the content so that it becomes a system but that isn't hard to do. And as already suggested in the postings you could add video to the product (which is a good idea) You need to provide a free report....and this is where you can get a bit fluffy....no not some PLR report as you mentioned in one of your posts...but one your write....Give an overview of the business but don't give anything away....personalize it with a story of how you started and how making that kind of money changed your lifestyle, etc (everything on a positive note)....and how it can the readers too...get the readers confidence...let them get to know you....and then get into a gentle persuasion mode pushing towards the sale. The report will start your list and allow you to market to those again who didn't purchase after getting the report. It looks like you are hosting on GoDaddy...I personally would move my hosting to another hosting service...my preference would be Hostgator....much easier to work with and the autoresponders can be used efficiently so you don't have to rush out and get an aWeber account. You also need to pick up one of the domains suggested here by Martin Okay ...enough said....here's an offer....no strings attached.... I will redesign and build you an index page for your site...the page will include an area for an optin form for the free report as well as the sales copy area. If you like it use it...if you don't use it then so be it. If you want this just let me know. The earliest my schedule will allow would be mid next week....would help if you had the new domain purchased before I do the page so I can incorporate it into it. As I said it is a free offer...it's up to you. Cornell |
Re: DO THIS FIRST Samir
Thank you for some great advice Duane.
The folks that I am targeting are the stay-at-home moms, cash strapped students, fixed income seniors, the unemployed, the under-paid, basically anyone looking to earn cash either on the side or fulltime depending on how much time they have available. Based on the keyword performance, it looks like the people that are most interested in my ebook are those who are looking to earn extra cash. I know that 283 clicks is definitely not enough to come to this conclusion but at least it tells me where to start. I like your survey idea but as Ankesh points out, can you give some pointers on what questions I would ask? Most people here have suggested that I build a list so I am definitely looking into that. It looks like many people here favor aweber. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with MailChimp? They do not require any upfront signup fees. Thanks -Samir |
Re: Critique and Free offer
Cornell...thank you for taking time to write.
I never get offended by constructive criticism. You've offered me some great advice and an offer I just cannot refuse...so yes, please count me in. With regards to the domain name, I've done a lot of reading specifically about how Google search algorithm operates and what I have learned is that Google no longer looks at keywords in the domain name because of the numerous abuses. Instead, the search engine looks for keywords in the title and content of the page. Even metadata is no longer looked at because that too can be easily abused. Thanks -Samir |
Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
Quote:
To clarify, it would help to have keywords as part of the domain name so that it's easier to remember but please see my reply to Cornell on why I think it wouldn't help me from SEO perspective. |
Re: Critique and Free offer

Hi Samir, Thank you for bringing up this profit niche. From the response in this thread and getting 5 sales from it shows, to some extent, that you have a marketable product. Plus your great return of 11 sales out of less then 300 clicks (4%) is more encouragement. Maybe not profit wise as far as the PPC but with some tweaking you can make even the PPC profitable. Now your forum marketing has hit PROFIT right away with $50 in sales with no outlay of advertising. (hint, hint) I was not going to post any more until the weekend but I had a training session cancel so here I am. This thread has wandered toward keywords and keywords in the domain name. So let's talk about that part for now. Keywords in domain name: Six or seven years ago you could put up a site with very little content, no backlinks, and just the keywords in the domain and rank number #1 on page 1 in Google for many niches. That does not happen today for the most part. But that does not mean that it has no value. Back then Google”s algorithm may have ranked the keywords in the URL at 90% and now maybe at 10%. I say maybe because no one knows for sure since Google keeps it a secret. You said you read that keywords in the domain name has no value but I can show you 10 articles that say it does to every 10 articles that say it is not important. Because no one knows for sure. It’s a secret. But there is some value in having the keywords in your domain name. Also if the keywords are being searched for that’s a plus. Martin gave you 3 domain names that are better then the domain name you have now. “easily doable” has less then 10 searchers per month according to Google’s adsword tool and has no relationship with balloons. BalloonProfits.com Balloon Profits 0 searchers per month Balloons2Cash.com Balloon Cash 91 searchers per month Balloons2Profits.com Balloons Profits 0 searchers per month So out of the four domain names at least Balloon Cash has some sign of life. Now I just did a quick keyword search and right at the top was “Balloon Money” with 1,600 monthly searches. That is taken with the dot com extension but Balloonmoneymaker.com is available. Google will still see the words Balloon Money first and it will help you rank. If you did an extensive keyword search I’m sure you could come up with a lot more keyword names with even more searchers. I have the search results on a chart at: http://2abc.info/balloons.pdf From these charts you can see all are easy to rank as #1 on Google. So which one would you go with? I’m going to keep this post on the target of “keywords” and not get into back links (look at all them big goose eggs for the backlinks) or content. I will be back on the weekend to post what I think will help you rank for free advertising. Also other ways to get more visitors for free. Of course this is all just in my opinion and can be taken or not :) Best of success, Skip Rosell |

Hi Skip. I have no doubt that anyone that reads my ebook and expends just a little effort can make money. I did it from April 2009 to Nov 2010 so you're hearing it straight from the horse's mouth. Quote:
Thanks for the hint. You'll note that I now have a signature. This forum didn't allow me to add one before since I am a new member. Quote:
To continue the domain name discussion, one reason I didn't choose a domain name with the keyword "balloon" in it is because if tomorrow I decide to promote another product, I'll have to start the whole SEO effort from scratch. I'll have to register a new domain name that fits the new product, purchase a hosting plan, create the website, optimize it for SEO and continue working to improve it's ranking. Whereas, with a generic domain name like EasilyDoable, I only have to worry about optimizing one domain name and I can easily switch the product I am promoting or add to it. Quote:
I truly value your opinion and can't wait to get some more advice from you over the weekend. I think I'll temporarily shut down my website this weekend until I have had an opportunity to implement some of the feedback I have received and continue to receive from all the great people in this community. Thanks -Samir |
Re: Critique and Free offer
So keywords in domain still has value. Definitely more value than the title tag. But not as much value as it had 2 years back.
But saying that - you should definitely not go for balloon in the domain name. Balloons are just a means to an end. Not somethng people are going to search for. I personally think easilydoable.com is a good brandable name. Good for a blog. Not if you're planning to do a lot of SEO. But you probably don't want to focus on a lot of SEO as it is... 1. Get biz-opp blogs and newsletters to review your product 2. Advertise on other biz-opp sites 3. Advertise on Google and Facebook if you've increased your prices 4. Participate on 3-4 forums. And joint venture with forum owners Thats what I would do - along with starting an affiliate program so that others can promote the product. (But I won't harp a lot about affiliate programs unless you ask - as that will just seem biased - seeing how I run the most feature-rich affiliate management application out there in the market.) |
Re: DO THIS FIRST Samir

I've used aweber and mailchimp both. I would recommend mailchimp over aweber. (If you plan to start an affiliate program, do check out SuccessNexus.com - along with affiliate management features, we also provide fairly decent autoresponder and emailing options with our pro a/c. But we are no where close to mailchimp when it comes to email features. We don't integrate with facebook or do other social media stuff. And we don't support sending of HTML emails as of yet either - however this is something that is planned. But for most people, our solution is good enough - and integrates seamlessly with the shopping process. If you do plan to sign up for the pro a/c, send me an email with Sowpub somewhere in the subject before you do - for a special price.) |

Samir: My, my, my....you can either swim with the current and get where you want to go or fight the current and pretty much get tired going nowhere. Yes Google has changed algorythms but trust me they still put weight on keyword domains, meta tags, and content keywords....when everything matches up magic happens. We launched a site 3 weeks ago with the above matching up...we invited Google to index it...3 days later we were 1, 5, 6 for our 3 main keywords and as of today we have had 2,341 visitors with no further promotion. Please pay attention to what Skip is telling you in his post. Your thinking about the generic name is plausible but that really only works if you brand the name and that can take months if not years. With hosting and domains as cheap as they are these days it is feasible to do the minisite. $4.95 a month at Hostgator and a cheap domain name and away you go. The hard part is finding the domain name...I was contemplating one last week and didn't act but went to register it this week and someone else had snagged it. Okay enough about that. Will add your web page to the queque....looks like Thursday next week right now unless we run into an overrun on projects already slated....also we are into a 4 day holiday weekend here. Hi Ankesh...I just took a look at SuccessNexus.com and the app definitely has some great Affiliate management features but I am wondering if a website like mine, with only one product to promote and no followers (at least not yet), is better off with a site like clickbank, where the main benefit I have is that I don't have to go looking for people to promote my product, instead they come looking for me. I have a couple of blogger friends who I think can definitely benefit from successnexus.com and I will be sure to point them to your site. Thanks -Samir |

Re: $300 A day business but no idea how to market it
My experience with clickbank: affiliates won't find you automatically if yours is a new website with zero affiliates. But more affiliates will find you if you seed it well.
If you have 8-10 affiliates promoting your product and making a few sales with a good payout - then you will rise through various clickbank affiliate program finding softwares and plugins and scripts out there in the market. And attract a lot more affiliates. But without the original 8-10 affiliates, nothing will happen. (This is based on selling various products via clickbank over the years.) Now here is the cool part - you can use SuccessNexus.com along with Clickbank. You are not restricted to clickbank alone. If clickbank affiliates promote your clickbank link - then your website will show the clickbank checkout button. Otherwise it will show the successnexus checkout button. You can check this out at: http://www.2wordstrategy.com/?u=[email protected] Or http://your-clickbank-username.ankesh.hop.clickbank.net/ (Obviously - edit the red part. And click on the checkout button on the resulting page to see this work.) The best part is: you don't have to pay upfront to use SuccessNexus. So there is no risk on your part to use both the systems. |

Re: DO THIS FIRST Samir
Hi Ankesh,
THANKS! Excellent "Eye" by the way...and NO not a "Minor Point" I agree wholeheartedly it should be TARGET dictates OFFER dictates COPY. In terms of order of importance. At least this is how I actually focus on things. The order I originally wrote it was also based on where I wanted Samir to focus his energies based on the questions he asked. I was thinking "Backend Offer" which is why I put it last. Also the first thing I noticed was the sales letter in my "opinion" was not that good. I say "my opinion" because he WAS getting a 3% conversion of cold traffic?? I'm still in shock. So I kinda 'bit my tongue on the sales letter. But I see Cornell already commented on it. There were 3 different "you're probably asking yourself" type questions in the sales-letter. As I was reading I was acting like a potential prospect and I found myself shaking my saying "NO I was not asking that all". So I felt the sales letter was missing the mark by not answering the questions in the Targets brain. So CLARITY of TARGET was the first step. So first Get Clear on the problems of the TARGET then his COPY would improve and then we can figure out what "BACKEND OFFERS" we could try. As for "Offer" Creation itself. THAT would have been a whole other conversation. Which I am sure would come up once he started to re-write that salesletter. But very astute Ankesh. TARGET dictates OFFER dictates COPY is the order of importance. (FYI: Based on Gary Halbert's experience...my phraseology) NEXT You asked. 1. What all questions would You ask once you have zero-ed in onto the target? Hmm not sure what phase of the process you are asking about as i have a LOOONG secret list :-> But the down and dirty answer is. I'm looking for BUYING BEHAVIOR 3 Quick Down and Dirty Questions to get CLARITY about Buying Behavior; 1. What Offers has TARGET bought recently? 2. WHO Sold it to them? How did they sell the OFFER? 3. What Kind of OFFER can I GET and DELIVER that would satisfy the Target? That is basically it. If I were drilling down a little bit more I would say following 3 phased focus questions. 3 PHASED FOCUS QUESTIONS a. TARGET FOCUS questions: There are questions I would FIRST ask to get CLEAR on who my Target is. - Demographic, Psychographic - Age, gender, - Biggest Fears they have about potential product or making the purchase - Hot buttons etc etc. b. COMPETITOR/PARTNER (Player) FOCUS questions: There I would do competitive analysis of the market as a whole. To determine Who the other PLAYERS are, What is their value propositions, and How are they delivering that to the Targets? Can Create a complimentary value and partner? c. MY ADVANTAGE FOCUS questions: I would then determine my/or my clients strengths, weaknesses etc. (Standard SWOT Analysis) to create a better value proposition and win. Not sure if this answered your question or not Ankesh but this is a brief way how I would look at a market before deciding whether to attack it. Cheers Quote:

Re: DO THIS FIRST Samir
Hi Samir,
Thanks Glad I could help. Looks like you are getting LOTS of valuable advice and help here. Good for you. Hmm I just relpied to Ankesh's thread with some of the questions I would ask. Looking at your post now. I see that you are asking about specifically 'survey" type questions. Hmm tell you what I may have already answered this in my reply to Ankesh. Please have a look. My thoughts: 1) I'm not sure what YOUR specific objectives are i.e sell the ebook. Build an online business to make a million etc. etc. This will help determine how you proceed and WHO you will be targeting. e.g if you CHOOSE to Target Moms, your OFFER, your COPY and even your COMPETITORS will be different than if you TARGET the unemployed. 2) Build on your success; You have made 5 sales from FORUM marketing. DUPLICATE AND DOMINATE what is working for ya'. MAY be more profitable than the PPC. 3) Another "Market" you could target are LIST OWNERS like SKIP that are looking for valuable Products to offer their lists. AKA DISTRIBUTION FOR YOU SAMIR 4) In terms of your sales letter, you could incorporate your STORY into it like you did in your initial post here at Sowpub. This will help establish a relationship with your list. You have already seen the power of this right here at Sowpub. 5) Once you start to build that list. THEN I am certain you will get questions from your subscribers and you will then get a Feel for their concerns etc.etc. Looks like you got some work to do and some J.V's to get done :-> CONGRATS!! Best of Success Quote:

Hi Duane. This is my first attempt at Internet Marketing and although I too believe that the sales copy can use a lot of improvement, I'll tell you why I chose it. When I asked a few people what they thought about the title "Earn $300 a day distributing balloons", I got three types of responses: 1. Sounds like a scam 2. Sounds too good to be true 3. Probably requires a huge investment It was obvious why they thought that because the Internet is full of people who make false promises and scam people. So I asked, what if I offered Money back guarantee? and I was told, it would help but even that was not enough to convince people that this is for real. So a friend of mine suggested that I focus only on those people who are skeptical but willing to explore further. So we talked about how to do that and came up with three questions that give a little more information about the business. And that's basically how we came up with the sales copy. I am hoping that those who have bought my ebook will refer others to me once they have succeeded. I am also thankful for the many tips I have received from you all. Thanks -Samir |
