I need a few people to tell me if...
 

I put up a new website today at: http://www.startaphotographybusinesstoday.com but before accepting any members I need a few people to look it over and tell me if the Geo Locator is writing in your correct Town and State.

Every time I refresh the site in my browser the first paragraph has a different Australian Town and State showing and none of them are near me.

I'd appreciate it if a few SOW forum members could check it out for me.

The geo locator has me in Oakland California. I am in Sparks Nevada about 180 or so miles away. I think the go-go-gadget has missed the mark. Although when I refreshed it, the city did NOT change. Still had me in Oakland.

If that isn't what you are looking for, let me know and I will go back to the site and try again.

I just checked one more time. Still has me in Oakland, CA. Maybe that's close enough but personally I wouldn't go to Oakland for a million bux.

Geolocation works on IP address. For most people - it takes their ISP's location into consideration. Not their own location.

This won't be an issue for bigger towns and cities. But it will be an issue for smaller regions of the world.

I think its a novel idea nonetheless - even if there could be some inaccuracy with geolocation. Would love to hear how it performs.

Yes it worked for me. But I live in a city with over 12 million people living in it.

Now here is a geolocator that narrows down even further to roads:

That is off by about 16 km (10 miles) for me. Because it shows my ISP's physical location - not my own physical location.

Thanks to everyone's feedback I now know that its dead on for some people and way off for others like myself... even the Geo locator Ankesk linked to shows that I'm located in Brisbane which is a 5 hour drive south of where I live.

I guess I can still use it. Will just have to tweak any sentences I use it in so it will still make sense to those who don't live near the area it shows in the copy.

Ankesh, I'll be sure to let you you how it works out after a few months of testing... And thanks Phil, for expecting to see a quick pop - up as that made me realize that the Geo locator can also work inside of this cool WP plugin to make it even more powerful!

Thanks Phil, The Covert Geo Targeter is the plugin I'm using. I just found another one that could help narrow it down to the zip code. But that would only work for traffic from the USA.

Yuuup, I'm absolutely sure about that. When I lived about 50 mis away I had to go to both Oakland and SF once a month. Back in the 80's these places were relatively safe. Today, the whole dynamic has become skewered. This ain't a political forum so I'll spare my thought theology in that arena and just say if you plan on visiting either area, rethink your plans.

I looked at my geo location on Steve's site one more time this a.m. and I'm still in Oakland. Oh well, at least its virtual.

I hope Steve's venture makes him a fortune.
