Poll: Who is making some $$$

Just curious: I like Sowpub and all the ideas and advice that comes from it.
However, is anyone actually learning and making any money from the advice from this forum, or any other? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be negative, but just curious if anyone has applied techniques and advice from this forum or any other in order to improve life or make a difference in their life by taking action?

We can read all we want, but has anyone taken action on: Domain investing/flipping, headlight cleaning, auto detailing plastic handles/bumpers, cemetery headstone cleaning, local or national lead generation, ebay/Amazon selling, Amazon FBA, social media services with Facebook, dog scooper business, selling ads on boards, helping realtors with leads (lead gen again), chattel (Gorden and Jim Straw), Reputation management, consignment selling on ebay. I'm sure I've missed a few ideas and suggestions.

Who is doing what, and is the income ok? I'm just wondering. We all get bombarded with the next great golden nugget. I really want to know what is working for people (those that actually take action). and what is not. What is involved and what is not. I know a forum is a small place to offer such information, but a forum can also be a place to get to the point and cut to the chase.

My experience: I tried getting my hands dirty with the cemetery headstone cleaning. Only 2 calls with a 8 week ad, and neither were interested in my cost of $65.00. Wanted it for cheap.

Chattel? Tried buying here and selling there. I learned that what may sell in my area cheap, and I thought was a great item, doesn't mean much in another area. However, I did not give it much time, It is a learning process.

Lead Generation and Facebook services are the new "IN" with the gurus. Many, even small local businesses either have their "Own" people to do their work (which actually sucks and they don't realize or admit to it) or are not interested in new clients or using Facebook to engage the customers they spent a lot to bring in the door. Stupid is as Stupid does. Not worth my time.

I've babbled long enough. Instead of just ideas, I'd like to hear of successes or even failures here. We all seem to need to pay for this information from the gurus out there. And I can't stand gurus!

If I find something that works for me and is a good income generator, I will share what it is, in detail. Without charge. Wouldn't that be refreshing?

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Thanks for asking.

1. I've been registering and selling specific domains since some time now. I don't do it in a disciplined manner as I used to however. I don't buy and flip. I register and flip.

2. I've been putting in 2 hours a day behind international chatteling.

Wrote a post on it sometime back:
http://www.sowpub.com/forum/showthre...31778#poststop

It is doing really really well.

If I had to sum up why I succeeded, it would be: because I found an awesome untapped marketplace - a constant source of buyers.

With chatteling, you have to find the buyers before you go and find the sellers - and procure the goods to sell.

Since my post, I've seen a couple of competitors come up too - but surprisingly, sales haven't gone down. The market is growing faster than the competitors.

3. I have been earning from infoproducts since a long time, but I've never dealt with amazon yet. This will change over the next month as I am funding an amazon / kindle project. Hopefully it will do well - but too early to say.

Want a sneak peak? Send me a message - I would love some early feedback too.

3 Ways SowPub Makes Me Munny

Dear RickC,

#1 - There are lots of fellow sm biz owners here who have different ideas,
Ways of thinking and find links to Stuff I'd NEVER discover on my own.

So.

Sowpub is a great place to find Case Studies, stories and content for my
F-r-e-e New Idea Testing Ezine and my sales letters and info products.

#2 - SowPub networkers are a great barometer of the popularity of ideas.

If I post and find myself ALONE in my enthusiasm. Which happens a lot.

I WALK AWAY from that idea - cuz it won't sell.

#3 - I forget how it happened or who or where.

But someone on SowPub sent me to a Steven King mono-graph about HIS
OPINION of The utility of gun control.

Interesting.

Then I Discover King is SELLING his article on Kindle! What NERVE.

EGAD.

Kindle will let you SELL 25 page articles!

Now instead of a long book or two I'm preparing to list some articles
on kindle - saved me ooodles of time.

Thanks,
Glenn Osborn

Some things which have worked out for me...

Hi Rick,

Good question. Sorry it's taken me a couple days to respond, just been busy!

Of course, there simply isn't time to try to do all the businesses which are posted about here! People will pick and choose what suits them best.

Having said that, some people have posted about their successes (and sometimes their failures) on the forum over the years too, so there is also evidence in the posts.

Personally, I've made thousands of dollars from chatteling. I'm not so active in doing it at present, but I know it's something I can always start again at anytime and start making an extra income.

I've made money from info-products, and still do, both my own and other people's products. You can learn a lot from people here on how to do that.

While I didn't make money for myself, I did help a friend drive business to his restaurant, which helped him turn it around (he's a great chef, but the restaurant was failing because no-one knew about it). I didn't get paid in cash, but have gotten many free meals and discounts from his gratitude! I'm considering doing this on a more professional basis for other restaurants, as I've noticed there are often good restaurants which need help in getting the word out, and I've now proven that I can help them get business.

I also took a sales job once, at Gordon Alexander's advice, which I did mainly for the experience. I was selling tickets for a comedy club, on a commission only basis. Thanks to advice I learned from people here, I often won the weekly sales competitions. (They even offered me a promotion to a supervisor position, but since I was doing it for the sales experience, not for a potential career, I turned the promotion down so I could keep selling and gain more sales experience.) Now I know that sales is also something I can "fall back on" and make a living from if I ever want to or need to.

What's the result? With a lot of the knowhow I've learned from people here, I'm very confident I'll never starve or have to collect unemployment benefits, which is a nice kind of security!

Of course, to make it work out it's not enough to read, but you have to go out and take action! That's truly the best teacher!

My main weakness is the common ADD/ADHD type weakness (I believe I have some of the traits), which is that I don't always like sticking to things for very long periods, and I tend to like variety. However, it does make for a very interesting life!

Best wishes,

Dien

Hi Glenn,

It's interesting that you mention Kindle Singles, as I just bought one a few days ago!

The one I bought is "My Seinfeld Year" by Fred Stoller. If you see his picture, you'll probably recognize him, as he's appeared in guest roles in countless TV sitcoms.

However, for one season, he was a writer on Seinfeld. It didn't quite work out for him, though he did write the script for one of the classic episodes. He wrote the script for "The Soup." That's the episode where Jerry meets another comedian, Kenny Bania, who gives him a free Armani suit. All Jerry has to do is buy him dinner. However, when it comes the dinner, all Bania has is soup, so he argues it doesn't count, so Jerry still owes him dinner! (This happens more than once!)

Apparently, this really happened to Stoller, which is where he got the idea for the script. It turns out that Larry David (co-creator of Seinfeld) encouraged the writers to keep a notebook of their everyday experiences as possible inspiration for script ideas.

Anyway, I recommend this Kindle Single, especially if you are curious about what goes on "behind the scenes" on a show like Seinfeld...

I like the potential of Kindle Singles. It's certainly worth exploring!

Best wishes,

Dien

Thanks Glenn, those are some good ideas! I'll suggest them to my chef friend.

Here is how I helped my friend get more business for his restaurant.

When I started helping him, he didn't have a website. He was already listed on some of those restaurant review websites (such as urbanspoon, and others), but on all the websites, there was just one review (which was a positive one).

Virtually the only way he was getting customers was from local people who would walk by. What hampered him with this approach was that he is not located in the best area. He is located in a relatively low income suburb, and I think the locals don't eat out too much, and when they do, they are very price-conscious.

The first thing I did was to create a simple one page website for him.

This website has the contact details, an enticing introductory paragraph (designed to get people to want to come there), then a menu, a map (using Google maps), some quotes from my chef friend about his vision, then a brief biography about his background. Finally, there are links to articles about him and his restaurant from the media.

I next made sure he was listed on all those restaurant review websites, and that there was a link to his website from those review websites.

There were actually no articles about him in the media when I started the website, so I wrote a media release about him and sent it to the local newspapers. (On the website, I put a link to my media release, until he did start getting articles about him in the media.)

The story got picked up by one local paper, then it was further picked up by one of the two major metropolitan newspapers, which printed a full page review of his restaurant. (The top half of the page was my friend's photo, while the second half was a positive review based on an unannounced "secret visit" one of their reporters made to the restaurant one night. They sent their photographer around at a later date to get the photo.)

As you can see, this is actually basic stuff. The key is, he had something people loved, it's just that few people knew about it! I really just helped to get the word out.

There's a lot more I could do (such as develop an email list), but that's what's happened so far!

Best wishes,

Dien

I'll just mention that there were some definite noticeable results from what I did.

As I mentioned earlier, before I started helping out, he was only getting local people to come to his restaurant.

After I started helping to "get the word out," he was getting people driving halfway across the city to go to his restaurant. That was something he wasn't getting before. So the difference was quite noticeable.

Another difference was that these new customers were much less price-conscious, and were happy to spend more money.

So, as a result, he was not only getting more customers, but he was also getting a completely new class of customers he wasn't getting before!

In addition, there was a "snowball effect." He started getting public reviews for his restaurant on websites like urbanspoon - all of which (so far) are positive. Of course, this brings in even more customers, as people read the reviews!

Best wishes,

Dien

Hi Rick,
LindaC here.

Short answer to your poll:

Yes Rick, over the years I have made lots of money
putting to use and following through on several ideas
that I have learned about from post of several SowPub
members.

My advice to you is ( find a business idea that interest you
and go to work bringing that idea to life) .

And remember, you don't need to create new money there's
already enough money to go around.

All you need to do is find a legal way to obtain your fair share.

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Long post warning...

Hi everyone,

It has taken me a long time to press "send" on this post, well they say confession is good for the soul ;-). This is not a negative post just factual.

You know how the gurus like to say they've been online since forever. So have I. The only difference is that I've never been able to make it work for me.

Sometimes I feel like a reverse Midas, you know, the guy who everything he touched turned to gold. For me it feels like everything I touch turns to sh*t.

I work a 9-5, have done for a long while now and get paid well. Only problem is I royally screwed my finances so well that I've been paying off debt for the last 3 years and still have another 5 to go. So money is pretty tight, hence the need to find something workable on line.

I have done many different things to earn a extra crust but usually ended up losing out and paying though the nose for an expensive course that didn't work for me. I've built more sites than I care to remember, none of them profitable, until now.

Mostwantedwatches.com is a site I build earlier this year as a sort of "sleeper" site, you know, set it and forget it. I checked the stats recently and over the last 3 months it has gotten around 1500 fresh hits a month and has, drum roll please, generated around $60 (45 UK pounds) from eBay clicks. I've got adsense on there as well but that has brought in 0 buxs.

So 2 things, firstly thanks to all of you who have helped me by answering questions or giving free advice and in one case providing me with info that you have sold for real money in the past. My respect to you.

Secondly, I want to develop this site and see how far I can get with it. So again I'd like the Sowpub community's help and advice.

- There aren't really any decent affiliate products out there to promote in the wristwatch niche, mainly product (actual watches) referrals like eBay. So I can't see affiliate products as a way forwards.

- I don't have connections to access free watches for reviews or the spare cash to buy more watches to review. I'm not a watch aficionado, just have a mild interest in them. So I think the expert route is out.

- Watch forums have been running for years and are well established, so I don't think a membership site or new forum would work.

- I could work on building a mailing list but what would I promote?

As you can see, I've reached a sort of impasse and need your collective brain power to help me push this forwards.

So how can I move this site forward? Any and all ideas welcome, the more the better.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Best regards,

Paul.

PS: if anyone needs a beta tester or someone to bounce ideas off or any help, please let me know. I'd be happy to assist.

Hi Paul,

First, thanks for asking your question...

I had a quick look at your website. The first thought I had was, who is your target market?

It looks like you are targeting "everyone"... If it were me, I would probably pick a "niche" group to target.

For example, the founder of "The Sharper Image," Richard Thalheimer, started his business by selling a watch. However, he didn't just target anyone... He started by selling a watch which targeted runners...

So, I would research and pick one or more groups you want to target with your watch sales. The "sales pitch" would probably be different depending on the target market.

Once you have your target market, then it is easy to figure out what to send them if you start a mailing list. You send them things which that target market is interested in! For example, if you were targeting runners (just as an off-the-cuff example), you'd send them things of interest to runners...

This could then expand to selling other things related to running... And so on...

In my opinion, I would first choose a target market - and go from there...

If I have any other thoughts on this, I'll share them...

Best wishes,

Dien

P.S. Maybe I am wrong... I just had another quick look at your site, and perhaps you are targeting the "high end" of the market - executives, or other people with wealth, for example? If so, you could then find out what other things those people are interested, and also sell those, and talk about those in a "newsletter" to an email list? You could look, for example, at the "Robb Report" to see what the luxury market is interested in (if that's who you are targeting)...

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Hi again,

Thanks for the excellent response to my post and request for help. I'd like to reply to Dien and Phil/Dave's comments.

Note to self: relax shoulders, deep breath and...

I had thought that "wrist watches" was a niche/targeted market with my assumptions based on the relatively low numbers I found when doing keyword research. Also when I looked around for the traditional online signs of a large market, they weren't there.

However after reading Dien's post I can see that was a little shortsighted of me -----> back to the drawing board on my market research... :)

Phil, in answer to your question, yes I'd really like to make money fast and clear up financial mess quickly. "Why not [Analyze] your Expertise through your Work related Experiences etc...". Unfortunately I suffer from a rare form of problem called "Low self esteem with paint by numbers syndrome". Meaning that when I take a long hard look at myself and abilities I find it hard to find anything that is readily saleable.

I currently work as an Emergency Response Manager. I work with the emergency services in the UK and France on mitigating the consequences of accidents/incident/disasters in a specific location. Clearly we try to prevent such things from occurring but need to be ready if it ever did.

We write tons of procedures, plan organise and direct exercises based around bad things happening + work day to day with our onsite firefighters and specialist technicians.

In relation to this I built a site called genprep.com based around emergency preparedness etc, even created (with help from Gordon) a couple of products on bugout bags and how to create evacuation plans. I sold 0 copies and shut the site down. The info I'd offered was freely available from tons of Uk and US government related sites.

Phil, you mentioned a few possibilities "Even Brokering misc. much needed Services or some type of Spin on the Many possibilities and opportunities..." I know that I would be able to take on some of these ideas but the way I have learned in the past is by being shown how it's done and then doing it for myself (hence the paint by numbers reference). But I think the real issue is finding customers who want the services I'm able to offer, and who are willing to pay more than $5 a time.

Thanks for posting the links, I'm emailing the WF programmer about his software and looking at the other sites you posted. Dien, I'm also taking a fresh look from the target market perspective. You are right I had aimed at anyone interested in buying a watch, instead of a specific kind of buyer.

Best regards,

Paul.

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Thanks for experimenting and seeing what sticks to the wall - Paul.

1. First thing you need to do is go through your analytics. If you're not using any traffic analytics program yet - then remedy that. Signup for google analytics or something similar. And see which pages are receiving the most traffic. Chances are, it will be just one or two pages that is bringing in all the traffic. All your pages on your website won't bring in equal traffic. So first step is intelligence gathering and discovery process.

2. Check out: thewirecutter.com - its a gadgets review site. But they don't buy 20 laptops to review and then tell you which of those is the best laptop to buy. Instead what they do is curate the reviews and opinions and then write a review themselves. You don't have to buy 100 watches to review each of them. Just do the research imagining that you have to buy a watch yourself. And then write down how you made the decision to buy that particular watch. Rinse and repeat for each audience / usage. Best budget watch. Best formal watch. Best watch for women. Best watch to gift. etc etc.

3. Do some research and find watch distributors. See if they can drop ship for you. If not, see if you can buy and sell just 1 watch at a time from the traffic you receive. You now know that buyers are coming to your website and buying from ebay - so figure out which exact watch they are interested in - and sell that and make a profit. Then repeat. Then repeat.

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Ankesh, Phil, Dien, thank you.

I have taken on board your comments and will be spending the weekend reviewing the links that Phil sent, looking at my target market and sorting out my stats to find the most active pages on my site.

I've already spoken via email to the "watchclone" programmer and that is a distinct possibility. But I also need to consider Phil's comments about writing for one of the sites he listed in order to generate some quick income.

The one thing that holds me back from that option is that nagging inner critic that keeps shouting at me "no one will want anything you write, you're not a writer etc etc". He's an annoying little bugger and a real pain in ass.

Please keep your thoughts and ideas coming. I will post regularly and let you know how things progress. If anyone else who's read these posts has any thoughts and ideas please don't hesitate, join the discussion.

If there's someone else out there who's struggling, get in touch and we can form our own little mutual support fan club;)

Warmest regards,

Paul

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

once again , interesting thread ...I still have to get my PHILtranslator plugin:)
Paul...write under a 'fake' name...then you can be anyone you want to be ..I was listening to an American Greed episode on the radio , talking about how this one Greedy guy was buying 200k watches ....dont know how many of those types are shopping online tho ..

That 'nagging' voice you hear is the voice of inexperience....not fear. Once you jumped off that high dive the first time, it became FUN...Believe it or not, most people ( except SowPubbers ) dont have any interest in your success or Failure...they are too busy in their own worlds.

I would use your expertise in prepping in the doomsday area..and see what happens....do like Phil suggests and write some articles for people. get a big red nose from your local hobby/birthday store . put it one. walk around in public...see what happens...

hope everyone has a wonderful, healthy, happy holiday season and Merry Christmas !

Re: Poll: Who is making some $$$

Bob, thanks for joining in.

if you ever get hold of that plugin send me the link. Phil thinks so far ahead and faster than I do, that it's sometimes hard for me to keep up;)

I'm working my way through the list of links he posted, to get an idea of what's needed in order to earn more than a couple of dollars for a 500+ word article.

I've never been able to work out what keeps holding me back. I certainly put the hours in. If you believe in the 10,000 hours to mastery theory, then I must surely be a master of something, twice over, given the time I've put in over the years:D

Maybe I'm jumping off the wrong high dive or haven't gotten enough water in the pool to make a splash... perhaps I should have been born an Orca...:)

The big watches do sell online Bob, I've seem some really big auction sales over on ebay and Amazon has some big brash expensive ones for sale.

Any and all suggestions warmly received.

Happy Christmas to you Bob and holiday greetings to all SOWPUBBERS.

Paul.

Hi,

quick update:

I'm looking into the suggestions posted by Dien Phil and Ankesh for the watch site. Since my last post, visitors have disappeared, so I'm stumped, but still looking at how to get things moving.

Best regards,

Paul.

Thanks Phil,

That's a great article you linked to!

The great thing is - people could do what he did, for other niches too... Use him as a model...

Regarding watches specifically, it just occurred to me - I love mechanical self-winding watches! I've had a few in the past... I love them. I find them a little bit "magical"...

No electronics at all. But it works - and you never have to wind it. For some reason, I love the whole concept. They often look quite beautiful, too...

I wonder if there are other people "out there" who are like this, too? Who knows, it might be a viable niche in itself... (More research may be needed!)

Best wishes,

Dien

Re: With Wristwatches Website Hodinkee, Benjamin Clymer Carves a ...

Phil,

Thank you. Benjamin Clymer's site is wonderful. I visit regularly. Would love any of watches he and his team talk about, but they are way out of my price range.

Who would have thought that a site named "Hodinkee" would get almost half a million visitors every month. His advertising income must be huge...

All the best,

Paul.
