How to do a marketing blitz like Lady Gaga!

I'm not really a fan of Lady Gaga...

Having said that, she knows how to get attention and market herself!

As you may have noticed, she's just come out with a new album, and the marketing blitz has been on...

Here's an interesting article about it...

Gaga blitzes the market with landmark campaign
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110525/.../us_going_gaga

I thought this quote was interesting...

-----
"It was really about expanding the distribution on this album and going into as many non-traditional retail partnerships and non-traditional marketing partnerships as possible," Gaga's manager, Troy Carter, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
-----

If you read the article, you'll see that she is marketing her album many "non-traditional" ways with many different partners - e.g. selling it at Starbucks, Lady Gaga-inspired clothing available through an online fashion outlet, a new online game "Gagaville" (by the creators of "Farmville"), a promotional giveaway with Best Buy, etc.

There's a great "lesson" here... You don't have to sell your product only one or two ways, or the way that all your competitors sell it. You can sell it in "non-traditional" ways too - by partnering with others in "win/win" deals.

This also reminds me of another story. Joe Cossman wanted to sell some "shrunken heads" he had just acquired - but how? In the end, he didn't sell them through toy stores or novelty stores - he sold them through gas stations, and he sold a lot! A gas station is not the normal place you would think of buying a "shrunken head" - but I guess they were great "impulse" items when people went to pay for their gas.

In summary...
  • Consider selling your products or services through non-traditional outlets and channels.
  • You can do this by doing "win/win" deals with the various people who control these non-traditional outlets and channels.
Best wishes,

Dien

Dien,

Thanks for the insight. Between you and Phil and a few others on here....the thought process is never ending.

Joe Cossman is one of my favorites. I remember him having his own show on cable TV back in the late 1980's, standing in front of the American flag and talking about marketing.

If shrunken heads can sell at the gas station....maybe helium balloons??? Hmmm......

Subliminal Messages and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Phil THANKs for the "Hidden Messages" link. Very addictive site. But you did "forewarn" us about it didn't you. Ha!

One of their articles discussed Subliminal Advertising and gave Proof as to it's effectiveness.

I have argued for years that subliminal advertising "Does Have an Effect"...on our subconscious mind.

Why?

Here's a quick trip down memory lane.

Years back in University. I volunteered for one of those paid Psych. Experiments. I don't recall the EXACT methodology or Purpose but I DO remember my astonishment at the results.

To the best of my memory the experiment was broken into 2 Days.

Day One: I was asked to memorize a list of 50 words in a given time frame and regurgitate them to see how many I could remember. I was able to do this fairly easy as I trained my mind back in high-school with memory techniques. So I kinda cheated lol I did really well aka 90% or close to perfect

Day Two: I was asked to look through this "Microscope type device" (oscilloscope?) I saw a Bright Circle with one word in black text in the middle. I was instructed that they would FLASH a word and all I had to do was tell the experimenter what the word was.

I nodded that I understood...and the experimenter gave me a "TEST" Flash.

I looked up from the oscilloscope and said "YOU GOTTA Be Kidding me...that was WAY too FAST I couldn't read that word."

The Experimenter smiled and she calmly said. "Please continue"

So I went back to the device...and FLASH...I had "No Idea" what the word was but I had to tell them a word. So I just "guessed"

FLASH..."HELICOPTER"
FLASH..."Tiger"
FLASH..."Octopus"

This went on for about 50 more times.

At the end of the experiment I was Laughing hysterically to myself thinking. What a waste of Time that was.

The cute "experimenter" ... Yes she was a cute girl asked me "So How do you think you did?"..."How many words do you think you got right?"

I looked at her and said "Are you kidding?.. like 2...MAAAAYBE"

She looked at her paper and looks at me with a WEIRD look...

That's when she delivers the shocking news.

"Oh my goodness Duane YOU"VE GOT THE HIGHEST SCORE WE'VE EVER Seen"

Ummmmm....WTF??

I asked her..."How Many Did I GET RIGHT?"

Her. You GOT 50% aka HALF of the words CORRECT!

STUNNED! BANG! Boom! Duane rubs chin after it hits the ground!

I asked her "How the Heck is that possible??"...I had "NO idea" what those words were I was just guessing?

She then said that those "words" were from the original 50 or so which I had memorized during the previous session.

I'm not sure WHAT they were studying or what the purpose of the experiment was. However...

I DO remember the feeling I had.

When she asked me how many words I thought I got right...I CONSCIOUSLY did not know. And I was telling the TRUTH..However Unconsciously or My subconscious DID in fact READ the words that were FLASHED to me.

So while I did not feel to rush out and get a "Helicopter' or "Octopus" there Obviously was some sort of "Impression" made on my subconscious mind.

As to whether it would affect buying behavior...? hmmm

Probably just says I'm highly suggestible.

Thanks Again for the Link Phil

Hi, Duane - that's exactly the reason why we're all prohibited from sneaking flash words into TV ads and, I think, online advertising. The eyes can see and read flash words and it's an extremely subversive way of "persuading" people. I think I first came across this in a book by J.A.C. Brown called ... Techniques of Persuasion ... as far as I can remember.

Can We FLASH Subliminal Messages to other people via our eyes?

I say yes. YES you can. In fact, I teach people how to do it in my Animal Hypnotic FASCINATION course.

I might even argue that FASCINATION is the natural "subliminal message" we send to each other.

IF you've ever been "chilled" or had the hairs on your neck stand up when someone gave you a certain look, you've experienced fascination. The argument is where the line is drawn between subliminal, overt and/or subtlety.

Vance Packard's work of the 50's "Hidden Persuaders" was a hallmark study and in my own studies, I've found Adolph Hitler to be one of the modern masters of mass hypnosis and his presentations were carefully staged and included not only overt conscious messages but also some thought out subliminal messages.

YES, it is important to be aware of these things and to arm yourself with the knowledge of how they are used upon us on a daily basis.

Re: Subliminal Messages and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Thanks Duane. Very interesting.

Here is a fairly comprehensive wikipedia page on subliminal stimuli:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subliminal_stimuli

1.
Subliminal ads work. But is it really subliminal is debatable.

For eg:

Quote:

I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, t he olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rgh it pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe."

Our brains are awesome at expatiating. Even if you can't read the whole word, you can expatiate the right word from just the first 2 letters.

And because of the effect of "recency", also expatiate correctly from 1 letter too.

2.

Subliminal experiments have only ever worked when the input was small in size. It worked for words. Not for phrases.

3.

There was an experiment done where the folks were shown a video of 2 teams playing basketball. And they were asked to count how many times the ball is bounced.

The video had a mascot in bear suit pass through it. But half the people didn't notice it.

This was not subliminal - and yet people didn't notice it. Because their brains was focused on some other task.

Keep this experiment in mind for the next bullet paragraph.

4.

People were subliminally shown the word "beef". Then they were shown 5 food products - only 1 of them with beef. And asked to select 1 that they would like to eat. Beef was not selected more times than usual.

But when people were given a survey after that - the group that was shown beef did say they were hungrier than the control group (the people who didn't receive any subliminal stimuli.)

Your brain is awesome at expatiating. But its very poor at remembering what it has expatiated. No focus = no memory. But the stimuli is still there.

So its a murky area. You can't just expect magical results from adding sublminal stimuli to your ads. Adding the words "Buy Now" won't make people buy your product. It may make them enjoy shopping more though.

Re: Subliminal Messages and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Sorry - got a couple of details in my bullet paragraph 3 wrong. Folks were asked to count the number of passes 1 team makes. Not the number of times the ball was bounced.

Here is the correct version:

Hi Duane,

Thanks for sharing your experience with psychological studies on subliminal effects... It's fascinating stuff!

It's quite interesting too to hear it from someone who was a participant in such an experiment!

I think we probably still do not fully understand such things (while we understand some, I'm sure there is still much more to understand)...

Anyway, it's great "food for thought"... :)

Thanks, Duane!
