Relatively New Advertising Trend... Sign Spinning!

They don't have them in my part of the world yet, though you may have seen them around... They're the...

Sign Spinners!

Essentially, they're a "new" version of the "human billboard". You know, the guy wearing a "sandwich board" with advertising on it, who walks around all day to promote a retail store or something like that...

"Sign spinning" takes that idea, and turns it into acrobatics!

The benefit of it is it GRABS attention!

In fact, it gets SO much attention, that some authorities are talking about banning it - because it can distract people and cause accidents!

Here's a great video of a sign spinner...

And here's a guy explaining the origins of sign spinning...

Pretty cool! :)

Thanks for that link, Dien. Not because of the sign spinning, which is interesting and (hopefully) a passing fad as it can be hazardous to passersby, but because it led me to a whole new source for my ongoing research projects.

Before viewing this link I was under the impression that YouTube was just nonsense, ego-driven videos and dry business ads. How wrong I was! In just a few minutes I saw graphic evidence of WHY rearfacing seats are safer, saw ways in which spinal cord injuries are being helped etc. Fascinating! Thanks a million...

Hi Sandi,

I'm glad my little post played a positive role...

There IS some great stuff on YouTube.

Just be careful with watching videos on YouTube - or the day will go by before you know it! :)

If you know of some good YouTube posts, please post a link to them here!

Cheers,

Dien

For another "SPIN" on advertising here's...........

Great concept, Dien - thanks for sharing that.

Anything that grabs attention these days is worth looking in to.

This reminds me of a company I read about a few months ago in Los Angeles that owns some big 18 wheel trucks.

They rent out the sides for graphic advertising and then drive the trucks on the L.A. freeways during morning and evening rush hour traffic.

The idea is that with traffic at a crawl for hours, the ad messages are seen and read since drivers of cars have nothing else to do but look at them.

They did over $1,000,000 in business last year!

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for sharing that!

This seems to be similar to what you're talking about...

Dien,

I posted about Aarrow in the Archives awhile back when I came across their Craigslist hiring post...

They're Spinning a Great business...

Outsourcing and investing in the concept could put a profitable Twist & Spin on your Money... :)

Aarrow charges clients $60 an hour - double the industry standard - for the services of its most skillful employees.

But Jenks, a kingpin in the industry, commands as much as $70 an hour...

Starting wage they pay... $10 an hour... ;)

Re: Relatively New Advertising Trend... Sign Spinning!

Hi Dien

Thanks for sharing this concept. This was my first time seeing these "Spinners". I love the concept of "Human Billboards."

As I was watching some of these guys perform, I was thinking of some of other applications of this concept. Specifically to capture attention and drive traffic to an event.

Example #1: Human Billboards for Garage Sales?

Normally I see a cheap hand written sign posted up on a pole.

Example #2: Human Billboards for Night Clubs?

In downtown T.O (Toronto) on a Saturday Night in the club district, you will see various promoters handing out flyers to their club for the night trying to get the walk by traffic to come in. Perhaps not Spinning but there must be a more ATTENTION arousing method, since everybody other club is just handing out flyers as well.

Example #3 Human Billboards for New Housing Developments?

I saw one recently where this poor guy was dressed from head to toe in a "House Costume" of some sort and was POINTING a BIG white hand towards the development. Certainly caught my attention. Then I thought to myself, "This Guy but be sweating his Tail off in that ridiculous costume in this heat" :->

Wow and according to Phil's article (Thanks Phil) he linked to, the spinners get paid from $10 to $70 per hour.

Sweet!

Besides Spinning, what other attention grabbing Outdoo Advertising is there?

Thanks Dien!
