How do they do this......

The "free' ringtone sites have you put in your cell phone number online and a confirmation code is sent to your phone. When you enter it online, you are agreeing to a subscription and the service charges 9.95 a month to your cell phone bill.

How do they do that?

How do you set something like that up? I can't find any information online.

Same sort of thing with this site....

http://www.41414.com/?gclid=CODzlfrgoYoCFSQkGAodrW-Gug

It's a reverse auction site where you bid by phone and your phone is charged 99 cents per call.

Where can I find info on how to do this?

American Idol - you "text" your vote to a number and your phone is charged.

Any idea what this technology is called or what search terms I should be looking for to get more info on this?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, when the same type of setup is done via your standard phone, the info and service used to be through your phone company. A reasonable assumption would be that this could be set up through the commercial department of the cell phone company. Anyway, that would be where I'd begin.

Pay by phone, pay by cellphone, cellphone auto-pay, auto-bill might be terms to try. Good luck!

Re: How do they do this......

I had done some research on this some time back and had found it too expensive to start at that time.

To get those shorter phone numbers - seach for "SMS short code" services.
To charge people to send you SMSes - search for "Reverse SMS billing" or "Premium SMS."

The rules and regulations differ from country to country.

In India, you have to pay a monthly rental fee for the number plus pay for a minimum of 100,000 replies every month - which made it very expensive for a small biz to use such a service.

It may be different in USA.

Thanks Phil, but I'm not actually looking to do the ringtone thing or anything that others are already doing.

I just had another crazy idea and I wanted to reasearch the possibilities of it.

As far as those great vacations - here's a picture I took last time I was in your area....
