An unbelievable answer to future housing...

More and more space on the planet is being taken by buildings... How can we fit more people in, as the earth's population gets larger?

People have come up with different answers... Living underwater. Living on the moon. However, this is a new one for me...

What about, living in floating skyscrapers - that are tethered by cables to asteroids, captured so that they orbit the earth?

This is a possible future reality being dreamed up by some enterprising individuals...

The thing is, these floating buildings would constantly shift around the earth.

That means, you might hop out of your building for a meeting, while it's passing over New York. By the time your meeting is over, your floating home could be floating over London!

Wow...

However, imagine 100 years ago, how amazing some of the things we have now would be to those people. (Even this forum would be amazing!) You never know what the future could hold...!

This skyscraper is out of this world -- literally

I don't know about living out of this world but I do know about living on Earth. Well, only one part of it. Australia.

About 3 years ago I read an article that said we are making too much out of this thing called too many people and no place to live. The author used Australia as the example of the perfect housing territory.

According to the author every person on earth could live in Australia and there would still be room to house more. That's good news for anyone wishing to procreate or at least attempt the act, right?

I wish I had made a copy of that article but alack and alas I didn't. So if the author's math was correct Australia should ready itself for a huuuugggeee increase in population should we all decide to relocate.

Keep posting neat articles!!!

Hi Tom,

Glad you liked the article!

The main problem with Australia (as you know, that's where I live!) is that most of the land is desert...

It's too hot!

But...

There is one town which can show the way forward...

They mine opals there. They beat the heat in an interesting way...

Everyone lives underground!

The town is called Coober Pedy. I haven't been there yet, but hope to visit there one day...!

I watched a TV show on that fine little town about 2 years ago. I was absolutely delighted to see a "WOW" way to beat the heat and still have a very comfortable life.

If I ever get to Sydney to see my buddy Father Dave, I'll try to include a visit to CB. I bet Dave has never been there either so it would be a blast.

And as far as Australia being too hot, I bet you've heard of Africa and the Arabian peninsula and other desert like places, right? People live there and it is hotttt...

Re: Castle's in the sky or unlimited fresh water and electricity in the desret?

I don't know about hanging a building from an asteroid but Graphene could soon provide us with unlimited fresh water and electricity. That can turn the Australian Desert into one big oasis!

Graphene sieve could make seawater drinkable

Cheers,
Steve
