Was anybody here awake in 8th grade math?

This is driving me nuts. I have figured it out before and then forgot how.:o

Some amount, less 30% of that amount = $8

What is the amount, and how in the heck can I figure it for myself.

If I get an answer, I'm carving it on the back of my hand this time.

Hi Boz,

No need to mutilate your hand! :)

30% is just 30/100, which is 0.3 .

So you can set it up as an algebra equation...

Let's call "some amount" as "x".

So, "some amount, less 30% of that amount = $8" becomes

x - 0.3 x = 8

Rearranging it becomes

x (1 - 0.3) = 8 ... but since (1 - 0.3) = 0.7, we can write

0.7 x = 8 ... now dividing each side by 0.7 gives us

x = 8 / 0.7 ... or

x = 11.43 (rounding it off).

If you plug 11.43 in the original equation, you see it works out!

Best wishes,

Dien

Thanks Dien!

Original Amount = What ya got / .7 assuming we're talking 30%.

My dad was a math professor at one time. Good thing he's dead and doesn't have to see this.

Thanks.

I learned the following from Jim Straw...

Glad I could help! :)

Most people are afraid to ask anything, coz they're afraid they'll look bad... (I'm guilty of this about 1000-fold!)

Now that you're a math wiz...how many lottery tickets do I need to buy

to win the 500 million bux in the Mega Millions tomorrow?

I figure 6. Too many? Too few?

If I am X and one of a bazillion players, and the cash take away is only 250 million after taxes, is it even worth my time to buy ONE ticket?

And, my plan is to buy 6 tickets, but all with the same numbers on them, so I can win 6 times, eh? Pretty damn smart thinking, right?

OR, do I buy ONE ticket, and a six pack of Dos Equiss?

A conundrum wrapped in a burrito, stuck in a bog and surrounded by rattlesnakes...what to do????? What to do????

OH wait, I have a book somewhere on CASTING a winning Lottery Spell.

Hope I can find it in time.

GjA (Professor)

PS. Maybe 10 tickets with the same numbers would be better for figuring out the splits. ONE ticket for SowPubbers only. Wish me luck. NAH, don't bother, I gots me SPELLS workin for me.

Spells?

Maybe you should lay off of the burritos and conundrums, and give the spells a chance to pass.

Or, if you'd rather, I can recommend a good salve for that.

Re: Spells? and Spelling...just to irritate you...cause I know how these things

make you reach for the Buttdreau's butter...

Just to see...I used your where you're should have been...did you catch it? (since corrected)???

Your anal retentive need for correct spelling and grammar can be as miserable as a New Mexico hemorrhoid after a meal at an all you can eat Chinese buffet.

Thanks for the reminder...

Caught it. Ignored it. I've been baited before. :)

And then I have SPELLS of really not caring at all.

Reminds me Of A Good ol' Story/Mystery of the 3 Men going into a Hotel years Ago...

Quick one as Usual... Of Course with a few Twists and Ideas on the House! ...

3 men go into a hotel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30 so each man paid $10 and went to the room...

A while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only $25 so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5...

On the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a $1 and kept the other $2 for himself...

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27 add the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29. Where is the other dollar? ... :)

Easier way?...

70x = 8 ("less 30%" is the same thing as "70% of" (ie: Hacking off 30% is the same thing as KEEPING 70%), so... 70% of x = 8)

x = 8/70 (divide both sides of equation by 70)

answer (significant #'s... you figure out where the decimal point goes)...
11428.

Cheers!
