Phil,

You posted a topic that certainly has a lot of people talking - luck. I live in Northern Nevada (casino land) and indeed luck plays a part in many people's lives. But, that is just one part of their lives, right?

As for the other parts of their lives luck is an osmosis (The process of gradual or unconscious assimilation of ideas, knowledge, etc.) of a symbiosis (1. Interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
2.A mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups.).

In other words, without one the other can't exist. For example, if you are standing alone in the middle of the forest you are simply alone in the middle of the forest.

However, if you left word you were going to the middle of the forest and said if I don't make it back by Tuesday night, start looking for me there, you have activated your luck factors.

To put it in gambling language I'll use a real life example of a guy who won 12 million dollars at our local airport. He and his wife came to town to attend a convention and while he was waiting for his luggage he put a 20 dollar bill in a random slot machine. It just so happened it was a progressive machine which means the jackpot grows as people play it.

After spinning the reels five times at 3 dollars a spin he was down to his last five dollars. He hit the button again and bingo up jumped the flashing lights and loud noise those damned things make when a guy hits the big one.

Did he make his luck? You betcha. He picked the one machine that had osmosed the symbiosis of all the previous and current players of this particular game type.

As you may know all slot machines have a game pattern. The players don't call it a game, they call it a pattern. Big deal but that is what it is.

Everybody whoever played or was playing the machine had to contribute to this guy's jackpot otherwise he would not have won such a huge pile of cash. There was a gradual assimilation between two different organisms living in close physical association.

Again, it had to be so or he would not have won. The factor making it a close physical association was the machine. It is connected to many casinos throughout Nevada. This means you could be playing in Las Vegas while I'm playing in Reno (865 miles to the north) and we would be in close association because of that machine.

My friend, I think that is the ultimate in luck. For me, I want my grandfather's luck. He died at the wheel and not kicking and screaming like the passengers in his car as it went over the cliff on Donner Pass. :D

Thanks for your great threads. You get a guy to exercising his grey matter whether he wants to or not.

The Death of Adverbs

I see it all the time, and I guess it doesn't really matter. It just irks me a bit when I see it.

What lucky people do different. Argh. Is it so hard to type "ly"?

I hear it on the radio too, so it's not a typing thing. The world is changing.

Luck may just be the unfolding of a mathematical probability. Some people have it, some don't. I don't think it is changeable.

...actually, being hit by a car could be considered luck.
