So...is the coronavirus pandemic now over?

Many places (in the USA and elsewhere) are "opening up"...people are heading back to work...

Is it over then?

I don't want to be a "party pooper," but...

It won't work - unless it is accompanied by - at the very least - massive testing.

But, apparently it's reported that not even Congress has enough coronavirus tests to test all 100 senators...

If that's so, how can they test John Q. Public, if he needs it?

Here's why this is important...

The coronavirus has not been eliminated.

According to the "Worldometer" website, the USA still has over 2 million active cases.

That means that any of those can pass the virus on to other people...

And keep in mind, it's probably higher than that - because the awful thing about this disease is, people can get it with no symptoms...

And even with no symptoms, they can pass it on to others.

So, let's say a person went to a restaurant...

...and that's the only place he went to for several days.

He starts feeling the symptoms... He believes he has Covid-19.

Let's say he is able to get a test to confirm it...

Well, who did he get it from?

Probably one of the people at the restaurant... But who?

Unless you can test everyone who was there, you won't know.

It could be a person with no symptoms... Who will probably go on to infect a lot of other people - without even knowing he's doing so.

So...I say it's not over.

More tests are needed, at a very, very minimum...

I'm afraid "opening up" too early will make cases spike...

I hope I'm wrong.

Best wishes,

Dien

You are Right On Dien.....however.....America was NOT created and built on "Da Gummit" shutting down EVERYTHING!...causing 36 millyon to lose their jobs and many more to lose money.

The County I live in (the largest in Oregon) has had 24 cases and 1 death since this thing started. Is that reason enough for thousands of biznesses to close....schools and universities to close...disrupting the lives of thousands of children ......Every Church shut down?

C'mon Gummit......dis ting has gone TOO Far! You have OVER-Reacted. The SAME "Modelers" who have pushed the "Global Warming" Fraud (For their own greedy reasons)...were also behind THIS.

The SAME people (Politicians AND the "Fake Press") who helped take down General Flynn and other Conservatives....and the TOP people at the FBI, DOJ and CDC (Center For Disease Control) who started the Big CON to get Trump have been allowed to push their Liberalism/Socialistic ideas using this Virus thing as a "crutch" to gain More Power over "average" Americans.

It's TIME to stand up against these "Brain-Washed-Since-Birth" frauds.

Don Alm.....constantly trying to guide his Conservative grandkids thru their college days.....and not be spit upon or given bad grades because of their beliefs. I hope and Pray that maybe some :Lefties" will see what Liberalism and Socialism is Really like...and come to their senses.

I agree, it should be a local decision...

Hi Don,

I had a look... Out of the "lower 48" states, Oregon is doing 2nd best in terms of coronavirus numbers (per 100,000 people). Only Montana is doing better out of the "lower 48"...

Alaska and Hawaii are also doing well...

I agree that it should be a local decision. The two worst places are New York and New Jersey. So what they do should probably be different from Oregon and Montana...

How it "looks" probably depends on what's happening where you're at...

If you look at this map, it's pretty clear the Eastern half of the US is doing a lot worse than the Western half...

Hello Gentlemen,

it is far from over and opening to early may be catastrophic. It will be over when we have one (or more) medicines that actually work and of course a vaccine. But that will take time.
The major nature of the problem here is the inability of medical services (and that concerns entire world) to keep up with the number of people requiring help. Suddenly there is a surge of patients and there is not enough equipment and PPE. Hence the social distancing etc.
How are people doing? I think we can all see it on the base of our countries and inhabitants.
People are irresponsible and that can be dangerous when connected to ideas of reopening the towns and cities.

Not every life is equal... that's the reality...

Hi Olivia,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

As some have pointed out, what it boils down to is... how much is one life worth?

Also, different lives don't have equal worth.

Celebrities have no problem getting a coronavirus test, even if they don't feel sick. An ordinary person, with all the symptoms, can't get tested...

Clearly, celebrity lives are much more important...

In the USA, the taxpayer-funded stimulus money for small business has gone mostly to... bankers, and large businesses (such as public companies).

Small businesspeople are not as valued by government as much as bankers and big company CEOs are...

So despite the rhetoric, the taxpayer dollars are paid out to large businesses and the banks.

Small businesses get a lot of talk, but in reality just get a few scraps...

It's cynical... But when you look at the facts rather than the rhetoric, it show that it's true...

Re: So...is the coronavirus pandemic now over?

This is as predictable as a game of Russian roulette! I understand Don's frustration about the "you can do nothing while this is happening!" decision - and yet, where we live, about 20 miles from the centre of Glasgow, in a rural area, we have had cases one of which was about 200 yards away from us; we have seen for ourselves how one of our friends was affected by a "mild" case of the disease.

We have all become accustomed to the thought that there is a pill and a potion of some kind which might cure us of any disease; so when something new erupts, we expect that there will be an instant cure or solution to the threat to life and limb. Till that happens, the best way to stop this little virus in its tracks is to stay well away from one another. Remembering the story of Typhoid Mary, the only way to keep her from spreading typhoid infection was to incarcerate her on an island separated from the New York population. Effective, simple - not particularly kind solution to keeping the majority of the population safe!.

I guess that death is the ultimate freedom from stress and worry - but I would hope not to achieve that freedom for a few years yet.

Best wishes from Scotland
Margaret
