Here's a controversial question...

Here's a controversial question...

Should you hang out with "losers"?

Or is it better to only hang out with "winners"?

What do you think?

- Dien

P.S. I know some people will hate this question... It can make people uncomfortable...

GordonJ December 13, 2019 06:59 PM

What do you mean by "hang out"?

This time of the year, we are often "forced" (voluntarily) to hang out with family and some old friends. Some have toxic Thanksgivings, some have unhappy Haunukkahs and cringe worthy Christmases, let alone drunk uncle New Year's Eves.

The rest of the year we get to hang with whomever we want for the most part, unless we have chosen to surrender those choices by asking to be picked for a job. Then we surrender ourselves with whomever else is around us.

I'm not sure what hang out means, is it physical presence, in which instance I have minimal contact at this point. If it is time on the phone, or online or on the Internet sites or groups, then I would say we all tend to hang out with like minded people.

As you know, I'm not big on Winners and Losers. If Trump is considered to be a big winner, as he himself thinks and only HE among the Billionaires achieved POTUS, where does that put Mother Teresa on the spectrum.

I know a lot of social workers, and dedicated people to helping others who are Winners. So, some sort of a yardstick, a measuring device would be helpful.

When we start to think in terms of Winners and Losers, then it begins a cascading of comparison.

For me, a Winner is doing what she wants to do, on her terms, and being mostly in control of her time and days.

Losers are people who want something else and continue to go in circles year after year digging ruts into early graves.

So, I'll let my shirt hang out, I'll let the dogs out to hang, I'll hang my laundry on the line, but almost all of that only within me, myself and I. Winner? Or Loser?

Wow, you know how to cut to the chase!

Hi Gordon,

I have a feeling that you and I probably think alike on this topic...

I'm not sure what "hang out" means... I guess we can interpret it how we want...!

Here's what I had in mind when I asked the question...

Many years ago (before Sowpub!), I joined Herbalife...

I only lasted a month or so. (It wasn't my scene...) But...

During my very short time in Herbalife, I went to a Jim Rohn event (which was organized by Herbalife).

Jim Rohn said something a long the lines of, you'll make as much money as the average of your 5 closest friends (or something like that). You've heard it before!

So... his advice was (as I recall) - ditch your loser friends! Just spend time with the winners!

I think he was defining "loser" by income...

I felt uncomfortable with that. I have friends who have "low income" - yet whose company I've enjoyed...

Now, are they "losers"? I don't think so... But if you define everything by income... well...

As you said, where does that put Mother Teresa? Wow, you know how to cut to the chase!

So I ignored the late Jim Rohn's advice...

Who knows, if I had followed it, maybe I'd be 100 times richer?

I have both rich friends and poor friends. I try to hang out with people who I enjoy hanging out with, and who are basically good people... That's what I guess satisfies me in a more "spiritual" way...

But - I know there are people out there who give the other advice - to ditch your "loser" friends, and only spend time with your "winner" friends - where "winning" or "losing" is often determined by wealth or income!

So, I was curious what others thought... I'm glad you chimed in... Thanks! :)

Best wishes,

Dien

Environment matters. You change according to your environment. So create a good environment and things become easy on you.

I whole heartedly believe hanging out with winners is essential for winning.

But wealth is the wrong measurement for winning or losing. Try number of excuses people make as a measurement to determine if they are winners or losers.

Thanks Ankesh,

(I am Enjoying your newsletter. Donald Trump Obviously Knows about The TALL PERSON Syndrome You Wrote about. I just read that he has special shoes with higher Heels. So he is taller than his usual 6 feet.)

By Linking up to Affluent Mentors in Unusual ways
You can Find Out What those Mentors are DOING instead of what they say and S*ell.

For Example:

My "Consultant" overheard Mark Victor Hanson and Jack Canfield talking.

They had asked a B*illionaire at a Conference, "How Can We Become B*illionaires too?"

Mr B*illionaire asked, "How many B*illionaires in Your Mastermind Group?"

ULP!

None.

HOW DO WE KNOW they added 1 or 2 B*illionaires to their team?

EZ.

I Researched the "Chicken Soup" biz a while ago.

Discovered they S*OLD Their Chicken Soup books And The Brand.

But Kept 15%

Their 15% is now worth MANY MANY TIMES More (And growing fast)
than when they owned 100%

HOW
is
this
Possible?

Turns out the New Owners have Started Dozens of New LINES of Products.
BRANDED to the ***Chicken Soup for The Soul*** AUDIENCE.

Even "Chicken Soup for the Soul" DOG FOOD!

"TimeLife"
and others had been trying to B*uy their company for Years.

My ESP Tells me an OUTSIDE the Box
Thinking B*illionaire helped them find a B*uyer
who - Based on Previous Results - Could 10X their S*ALES.

Thanks,
Glenn

Thanks for the tip Glenn. I see how it makes sense to sell the rights to my magic/performing stuff and keep a percentage than making a website, et., etc., etc.

A hat tip to you !

I guess it could boil down to definitions!

Hi Ankesh,

That's all great advice!

I guess it does largely boil down to how you define a "winner" and a "loser"...

Someone who tries, fails, learns from their mistakes, gets up and tries again, and does so repeatedly, is not necessarily a "loser" in my book...

I guess I do try to surround myself with these kind of people. Some people may not be a success financially, but may be successful in other ways...

For example, a friend of mine (who passed away last year in his 70s) was not rich - but I wouldn't call him a "loser" by any stretch of the imagination. He had strings of successes as an actor (he had been in a few movies and TV shows), author (he wrote a couple of non-fiction books about Polish cinema and Chinese cinema, which were published by "traditional" publishers), and he also wrote (and directed and starred in) several plays...

When he passed away, he had several unfinished projects (a couple of non-fiction book projects and a documentary project are the ones I know about), but that's the way of people who are busy. Without a doubt to me, he left this world a much richer place than if he hadn't lived...

Thanks Ankesh! I'm grateful for your input!

Best wishes,

Dien
