No longer frequent on YouTube but THIS GUY caught my attention...

Not because he's Nigerian-born (like me)

But because I found something rang true about what he says in this TED Talk

Why don't we stop setting goals?

Please check out his TED Talk and let me know what you think

A way to tackle complex goals...

Hi Unpinkpanther,

Thanks for sharing!

I've been helping to look after my sick 3-year-old... She has a fever, and we're doing our best to get her back to good health! She is sooooo stubborn... and also creative.

She doesn't want to take her medicine, so she'll say she wants a small box of milk, with a straw... and she'll then drink the milk... and drink... and drink... at a snail's pace... the real goal of hers is so that you can't put any medicine in her mouth... She's very cheeky!

I've been very lucky to have been mentored on "goal setting"... But I want to share something a little different...

Sometimes, the path to a goal can be complex... so complex it's overwhelming.

One way to attack it is to think... I only need to know my goal, where I am now, and the next step I need to take... That's all!

I find that approach helps to simplify things, so they're not overwhelming... :)

Another good idea is to constantly revise your goals... This relates to what the TED talk you linked to is saying, when you think about it...

Best wishes!

Dien

Hope she's feeling better now...

Thanks for sharing, Dien

Hope your daughter is feeling better. (By the way, I salute her creative thinking!)

Yes, love how you broke that down. Focusing on the next clear step and constantly revising your goals

Part of why the TED Talk resonated with me was because I recently launched a subreddit (kind of a mini-forum)

Had to consciously fight off the urge to set goals of hitting first 100 members in Y days

Just focused on taking daily steps within my control that can help me grow the subreddit, even if it's just by one extra member

As I type this, we've just crossed 200 members since we started about 2 months ago

But I didn't set that as a goal to reach. So I'm enjoying the experience. Also I'm grateful for all the practical lessons I'm learning as I grow

Of course, some may find it more beneficial to set goals. I recently saw a YouTube thumbnail advertising how to set 20-year goals. (I didn't click through to find out how that's done!)

Having such goals can be helpful to some people for sure. However, in my own experience, I've found that daily actions that deliver quick wins can be more motivating and roll up to bigger successes in the long run

Thanks again. Greet your daughter for me.
