Browser question

Because hackers like to attack Microsoft products I am switching from MSIE back to Netscape however, I'm not sure whether to use the older 4.7 version or the new 6.1 version.

I "heard" the 6.1 version has some glitches.

Anyone have any experience with 6.1?

Thanks.....Don Alm

Re: Browser question

Don - I downloaded 6.1 (because my MSIE browser continuously froze in place) and had to continually download a lot of plugins that seemed to be included in the previous 4.7 version. 6.1 also runs more slowly on my laptop.

That answers my question about 6.1. I downloaded the 6.0 beta which was a dog. It doesn't sound like 6.1 is any better.

I had some problems with expired certificates with 4.7.

I haven't tried 6.1. I tried the 6.0 beta which was an absolute dog.

Re: Browser question

I've got MSIE 6.0, and Netscape 4.6 and 6.1 and Opera 5.5. Actually I have 10 other ones too, but you wouldn't be interested in those.

MSIE 6.0 is very unstable and crashes a lot. Netscape 6.1 is a heavy hog on memory. It's slow, jerky, and Windows does not seem to regain the memory spent on Netscape. Your computer just seems to get slower and slower until it dies. When 6.1 crashes on my computer it takes down the whole OS and I have to re-boot.

Netscape 4.6 is the one I used for that last couple of years, but it drains memory too. MSIE 6.0 crashes, as I said -frequently, but it does not seem to drain the system resources.

Opera is the best. There is a freeware version that serves you ads, but for $30 you can buy it and get rid of the ads. It loads faster, browses websites faster, handles Java better than Netscape, is fully HTML 4.0 compliant and has really good support for CSS Level 1 and 2. It also has some really nice features you don't get in the other two.

Re: Browser question

Steve - thanks for the info. I've removed all netscapes and replaced with Opera 5.12. Seems to work well and I don't mind the banner so far.

You're right! I use 4.7 Netscape
