Money-Making Ideas are ALL Around!

Case in point;

I took in a round of Golf last week at my local Country Club (first time in a Looong time)and.... I NOTICED SOMETHING!

Watch HOW my mind works!

Next morning I went to my Health Club for 30min on the treadmill and rowing machine and....I NOTICED SOMETHING!

THEN...when a buddy "begged" me to play Tennis at our local Tennis Club....I NOTICED IT AGAIN!

WHAT was it I noticed?

In each and every lockerroom, where people change their clothes into "workout togs".... workout... take a shower and dress in their "street attire" again AND....just before leaving those lockerrooms, guess what they do?

They LOOK at themselves in the FULL LENGTH Mirrors!...making sure their appearance is OK...one last time before leaving!

Now...almost EVERY person in the Clubs did this...took one last look in the full length MIRROR!

Their EGO....FORCES them to LOOK at that mirror!

Can you see where I'm going with this?

That full length MIRROR is DRAWING EYEBALLS!

What if there were ADS around the sides of that mirror? Would those Ads get some attention?

Probably!

Well, my reader friend....YOU have just been "treated to a Don Alm Initial Conception"!

I put together a mock-up sample and showed it to the people "in-charge" of these facilities and, the answer was "Yes! We'll let you install YOUR MIRROR!"

So...I'm off and running on another program...not that I need another project. I've got so much on my plate now I can hardly squeeze in anything. BUT...that's what "I" do! I MUST see whether or not THIS program will work!

So...keep your eyes OPEN! Money-Makers are ALL AROUND you!

Thanks for reading....Don Alm

Some of my Proven "Ideas".

Already being done north of us plus some

On a short jaunt into Canada last year I saw this concept being done.

Also there were ad boards on the inside of the doors of all the bathroom stalls, and my male companion mentioned them also installed over the urinals along with doodle boards.

Another thing we noticed were business card boards in heavily trafficed stores and restaurants - it seemed to be a franchise from what we could gather.

What are the TWO hardest words to answer with in the English language? An entrepreneur answers....

Hi Don,

Thanks for sharing that insight... I find it very valuable!

I agree with you - money-making opportunities are all around you... It's a matter of keeping your eyes open, and DOING something about it!

I think a key is that you DID something.... Many people could have the same idea, but then the "what ifs" would start to enter.... What if nobody likes it? What if people think the idea is silly? etc. Then, this becomes an excuse to do nothing about it.... (It can affect me too !)

I read recently about a successful entrepreneur who said this.... What are the TWO hardest words to say in the English language. The TWO TOUGHEST answers to give to a question....

His answer was....

YES and NO!

Most people ummm and aaah ... they don't answer "Yes" or "No". And so, they end up doing nothing....

A lot of very successful entrepreneurs don't have a lot of "education".... In fact, many see TOO MUCH education as a hindrance. Why is that? One answer is that, the more "educated" you are, the harder it can be to say a simple "Yes" or "No".

Instead, you're taught to "analyze" etc. While that can be valuable, it can also become an excuse for stalling.... (I know it can be true....)

Thanks Don - I really gained a lot from your post!

THE guide to persuading on the internet....

Don Alm July 2, 2002 06:17 PM

The phrase..."Already Being Done...!"

Since I started my first business when I was 16.... I have heard this phrase ALL my adult life.

Most people use this phrase when they want to offer up an excuse as to why they are not interested or do not want to start a similar project.

However....whenever "I" learn that a business idea is "already being done"...it SPURS ME ON!

Why? Because somebody ELSE also thought it was a good enough idea to go ahead and implement it. Further justifying MY initial feelings that the idea is feasible and workable.

Also...I know that with MY MIND and MY experience, I knew I could come up with some creative ways to market that would "blow competition out of the box!"

This reminds me of my latest program;
When I learned there was a new product that would "Make Decks Look Like New For Years!"....I jumped in and took a closer look. I love UNIQUENESS!

What I found was a lot of Decks, Fences, Cedar Shake Roofs and Wood Sided Houses turning gray and ugly and only a handful of people servicing the market.

With this new product I said, "Whoa Nellie!"...let's take a REAL CLOSE LOOK HERE!

I did and...just as with many of my other business programs over the years, I heard the old phrase, "It's ALREADY being done!"

Well...that may be true...BUT...it's NOT being done MY WAY!

So...I found myself in the "Deck Renewal" biz and having a ball. (I needed a break from the "Ad Biz" anyway)

When I started my first BIG business (Burglar & Fire Alarms)....MANY people told me, "That is already being done!"...or, "The market is already SATURATED with alarm cos!"

(Over the years I've also heard the phrase, "The Market is already "SATURATED")

I remember what someone told me about equating a given market with the game of Marbles.

If you place a bunch of marbles in a circle and drop YOUR marble on top of the bunch of marbles...SOME of the marbles will leave the circle.

The fact that the market was "already saturated with burglar alarm cos"....was great motivation for me. I went out and built my company (Securitronics Corp) into the LARGEST alarm co in the suburbs of Chgo.

Re: the reference to "Ads in Washrooms";
I did this in 7 restaurants in 1985 in Aspen, CO after I read an article in the Wall St Journal about a company called "Johnny Boards" that had started in NYC.

When I got a "hot-flash" about "Ads around MIRRORS in LOCKERROOMS"....THIS did NOT have the same "aura" around it as "Ads above urinals" had...therefore would be easier to sell...and I had never before considered ads around full length mirrors in "lockerrooms" until the other day.

So...even though this may "already being done" in other areas of the country...it is NOT being done in MY local Country or Tennis Clubs.

So...when I get tired of my present "Deck Rebewal" venture...I'll have something to do.

$800 A Day Renewing Wood Decks!

Re: Money-Making Ideas are ALL Around!

Hey Don,

Here is why its even more perfect:

> That full length MIRROR is DRAWING EYEBALLS!

***Because ever since I was in high school and my brother scoffed at me, "sheeeesh, Julie, you are SOOOOO vain" I don't look directly at myself in a mirror in public....almost always look off to the side......

Perfect idea for those who are not STARING DEEPLY into their own eyes!

With Passionate Gratitude,

Julie Jordan Scott

You took that the wrong way

It was meant as a reinforcement - not to get you on the defensive again.

What about this?

> Hi Don,

> Thanks for sharing that insight... I find it

There is a well accepted theory in marketing
circles I ran across lately saying that it is
only our reptilian brain (the one with emotions) that induces action.

Of our two other brains, the limbic system
induces "follow the herd" actions, namely
identity to a group of peers but no personal
action. It surrounds our reptilian brain.

And our grey matter cortex brain which itself
surrounds our limbic system makes comparisons of
abstract models, namely modelizations of
previous thoughts. All day long and with no other
actions at all.

Those three brains do not get along easily and
we have to make an unconcious choice as to which
brain's expression we let through at a particular
moment.

To induce action we have to speak to the reptilian
brains of our audience, namely to their emotions.

And afterwards provide social motivation material
and logical arguments for, once they have made
the action we wanted them to do, they can satisfy
their two other brains and be confortable with
their decision.

So it is the reptilian brain that has "Yes" or
"No" or "Is this dangerous" or "is it good to eat"
kind of preoccupation.

The limbic system will do like the herd.

And the grey matter cortex will try to make an
interesting matter of study out of anything.

So I hope this should help settle the matter
of who should have a say and who shouldn't.

Thank you.
