recording interviews
 

I will be interviewing people for a book, and may compile and sell some of the recorded interviews.

Questions please:
1. Is there quality enough equipment to do this over the phone? If so, suggestions?

2. Should I instead use a go between recording service to interview over the phone. If so, using what technology?

3. Should I just interview in person if I want to resell the recording?

4. Should I use cassette or digital?

I really appreciate any advice.

Hi, Jill,

Radio Shack has a little 'pickup' mike that attaches to the bottom of your phone to record conversations. You need to do the following, however, to be legal:

Tell, and record, the person (address by name) that the conversation is being recorded and ask if that is okay with them. If they don't speak up, ask them to repeat their response so the recorder can pick it up. This is your safety net for legality so don't skim past this.

It used to be (not sure if it still is but the phone company could tell you) that you had to have a beep every 10 seconds. I think the intro that I just ran through above circumvents this but check to be sure.

They may still sell the TCR 200, or something like that. Which stands for Telephone Casette Recorder. It is a telephone and casette recorder in one, so you can tape your phone calls.

Also, the number might be 2000 and not 200. Can't recall.

Do a search and you should find it.
