A way to feel better about yourself, and improve your success too !

Just over a month ago I wrote a post about going beyond your "comfort zone".... You can read it here....

http://www.sowpub.com/cgi-bin/forum/webbbs_config.pl?read=10996

When I wrote that post, I was pushing myself beyond my own comfort zone in a way I didn't mention. Through exercise!

I started swimming regularly. I chose swimming partly because it's a good low-impact exercise. Another benefit of being self-employed is I can choose my own hours, which means I can spend time at the pool when it's not too crowded, because everyone else is at work.

I think if you want to be a "success" in life, regular exercise has to be part of it. It can be hard to get started, though.... Which is why it relates to going beyond your "comfort zone".

I was your basic "couch potato".... Now that I've been exercising regularly for about a month, I've noticed some great benefits. I feel much better overall. I'm more energetic.

I'm also happier - I think exercising regularly somehow makes you happier overall. I don't know if it's endorphins or what, but I know it works. Somehow, it seems you get more pleasure out of life! :)

When I started swimming, the only thought I had in mind was to go beyond my comfort zone! The first day, I swam a measly 10 laps of the pool (with rest breaks). That was just beyond my comfort zone. Each day I swam, I simply swam as many laps as I felt comfortable swimming - then I swam an extra 2 laps, to get me just beyond my "comfort zone". After doing this regularly, in a few weeks I was swimming 40 laps of the pool (though still with rest breaks between some laps). (This is in a 25-meter pool - roughly equivalent to a 25-yard pool in the USA.)

Now, if I don't swim for a few days, I start feeling a bit "restless". I need my regular swim!

If you're a "couch potato" like me, I recommend getting started on some low-impact exercise. After a few weeks, you won't believe how much better you feel. Make sure it is LOW-IMPACT so you don't injure yourself! Try to do what you feel comfortable with, then just a little bit extra, to push yourself just a little beyond your comfort zone every time. You won't believe how quickly you'll get much fitter!

While I'm not exactly athletic looking now, I feel much better, I am more energetic, and the payoff has been wonderful!

I highly recommend it.... :)

P.S. I once read an article which said that there was a correlation between fitness and success. That is, people who were fit tended to be more successful. I don't know if this is true or not, but it's something to think about....

Good for you, Dien!

BTW, what's the temperature down there in Australia?

Health is one thing that many people don't seem to appreciate until they lose it. A cliche, but true.

It's something even money can't buy. Faced with the choice between a million dollars and losing their health, the choice is almost too simple...

Find out who the eccentric nut offering you the choice is, discover his wants, and market to him.

Exercise has been a fairly regular part of my life for a few years now.

I enjoy the challenge, the discipline, and the results tremendously. My example of the epitome of aging with health and fitness is none other than the Blond Bomber (who everyone else probably just thinks I made up).

Keep having fun, Dien!

Way to GO! Dien, and an addition advantage to your success formula?

Dear Dien,

WHOA! So impressed! You have increased your effectiveness so quickly!

Sounds like me with Yoga. I love it. And yes, the same "gotta do it" thing happens...and another thing that happens is that with Yoga or for me, with any physical activity that is a change from my previous activity (be it writing or coaching or whatever I am doing) tends to fire me up creatively as well.

I might be stuck in a problem and then I get up and go for a brisk walk, for example, and its like (what I call) "Brain Drano"...it works like magic!

Alrighty, I can hear "Weekend Update" starting on Saturday Night! Gotta go watch!

;-)

Eric, By Blond Bomber, Do You Mean...

...Dave Draper?
If so, I agree with you. I just got his most recent ezine, and I see that he's holding his 2003 yearly get together in my city of St. Petersburg, Florida.

I sure do, Bruce!

Wow, great. I read his weekly ezine too. Quite inspirational!

Wish Dave was stopping by my neck of the woods. Ah, I have a feeling I'll end up at one of his get togethers some day in the future anyway. A trip to somewhere there isn't snow on the ground sounds nice.

To: Anyone who's been putting their fitness off

Check out davedraper.com. Look in the weekly columns section.

If you used lift weights and you've been putting off going back to it, Dave's wonderful style may be able to spark a renewed interest within you.

If you instantly fall in love with Dave's style like I did, good for you! Another interest. Another ray of light in your life.

Have fun,

Erik

Hi Dien,

Way to go guy!

I also started re-exercicing lately.
I do stationary biking and military marching.

Still very little but I have to compensate
for years of "couching" and loving my
computer too much.

The benefits noticed so far:

1) more energy
2) feel better
3) sleep better
4) eat less
5) re-started my "almost dead brain"
6) want to do more
7) getting more creative
8) love life more and more
9) clothes feels looser
10) enjoying the winter more

It is absolutely "The Way To Go For Success".

Go ahead, get out of your comfort zone
just make sure you don't go all the way
to the "twilight zone".

More: My answer to the question: "Who is Dave Draper?

Here's something I just found myself sending in an email. And it sums who Dave is up pretty well.

My answer to the question: "Who is Dave Draper?

He's was a body building pal of Arnold and the gang around Venice Beach in the 70s. He kind of faded out of the limelight after winning a few championships. He's had some life changing things happen to him since.

He lived in a small cabin in the woods making handmade furniture. Had some problems with alcohol and drugs. A heart attack. Turned away from the spiral of negativity he had put himself in. Has been preaching health and fitness. Is a wonderful example of a fit 60 year old. And undoubtedly still stronger than most 20 year old scamps. He's weathered storms and injuries. Every diet and training regimen under the sun. He understands the emotions. The frustrations. And the encouragement that is needed.

He's found what works for him. Tells his loyal readers that. Tells them to experiment. To find what's right for them. To grow as people through the discipline. Consoles them. Creates bonfires of enthusiasm. He's an inspiration in an area I'd expected only jock dimwits. He's a voice of intelligence where I hadn't expected any. And he's a great guy.

Success,

Erik
