Would anyone in their right mind start a business NOW??!? Well, in fact....

War is looming. The economy seems to be in tatters. Everyone’s fearful and saving their pennies. Isn’t this the WORST time to start a business?

On the contrary, there may be some benefits in starting a business in the “bad times”. In fact, there are some famous businesses today, which were started in some of the worst times imaginable. I'll get to those examples in a minute.

First think of what it’s like to start a business in the “boom times”. Money is plentiful, you can throw plenty of it around. The problem with that is, many businesses which start in the “boom times” DO throw their money around. When times get tough, these are the businesses that “go under”. Their “spend spend spend” approach hasn’t prepared them for the lean times ahead.

However, if you start a business in the tough times, you automatically have that “survival” mentality which helps you to have a successful business. You’re not wasting your dollars on unnecessary frills – it teaches you discipline. Because you already KNOW it will be tough, you will respond with your own survival strategies and tactics.

Another benefit is that, when times are tough, there’s less competition. In some ways, that means it is easier to gain a foothold, than when there is plenty of competition. When times become good again, you’re already ahead of the pack, and ready to rapidly leap forward.

Here are a couple of examples. Four months after the big stock market crash, in February 1930 – a few people started a finance magazine. Their friends and family probably thought they were crazy. Their business was “Fortune” magazine, which you can still buy on the magazine racks today. It seems like it would be the worst time to start a finance magazine – however, it probably also means that there was little or no competition.

What do you think about starting a business magazine, just every other business seems to be closing its doors from hard times? That’s what some people did. In September 1929, six weeks before the crash, Business Week magazine was started. Business Week has survived until this day.

Although times are tougher – those who start a business now may have a greater chance of long term success, than those who start a business during the boom times. That’s because the “discipline” you need will be more automatic – that discipline will become a part of your own business habits.

This is a pretty radical thing to say, I think – as it seems to go against the whole “vibe” in the media. What do you think about it?

There’s an article about this I posted about one-and-a-half years ago – which is where I took the examples of Business Week and Fortune magazine from. It’s originally from New Yorker magazine. You can read it here:

As the article says, “let the bad times roll” – and get your entrepreneurial mind working!

Right On Dien

Against the "advice" of many friends and family I have started another one of my "advertising" programs...this one involves placing Restaurant Menus in an Album and placing the Album in Hotel lobbies.

I am starting this program in a city which is on the main corridor thru my state and many "experts" have told me that people will NOT be traveling by auto because of 2 things;
1) The War
and
2) $2/gal gas

Well...my first week out I did receive some of that negative response from a couple of my restaurant owner prospects BUT...those who know they MUST try and reach tourists...even if there are fewer tourists this year...buy my program.

So...one can stick their head in the sand and "wait till things go back to normal!"...or they can continue on as if everything is "back to normal".

Now...what if "things" NEVER get back to "normal"? Does that mean "us entrepreneurs" look around for a "job"?

Ha! Never in a zillion yars.

We just "keep on keepin' on!"
and
we "roll with the punches!"

"LET'S ROLL!"

Proceed with Caution?

Well, the war has begun.

Just recently I was reading one of the top dogs
in mail order who made the statement that the
days just before an impending war was not the
time to drop a 100,000 piece direct mail campaign
at the post office.

So maybe starting a new business right now would
be a questionable undertaking. People are going
to be distracted by war news, but life must go on.

So I am proceeding as planned, developing a new
business even as we speak. It will be launched
this week.

Time will tell whether the timing of the launch
will be affected by the war.

Re: Many are!

Dien,

I've already fulfilled 16 request for info/opportunity packets since 1 March. Many others who have received their packets since the new year have already sent in their first order.

Meanwhile, I just spent 8 days home-bound with the flu and bronchitis, with today being my first day to call on customers in a week.

During the six business days I was grounded, I completed orders for nearly $2800.00 in promotional advertising.

The orders haven't slowed down and my first day out (Wednesday), I wrote 8 orders for 6 customers totalling $3200 due to a backlog demand of buyers needing to see me in person.

That's $6000 in a week and a half, leading up to the onset of the Iraq invasion by the US and allies.

We have at least $3000 we expect to complete by week's end if I can cover enough bases.

However, I wouldn't want to be a new car salesman at this time, as many big ticket buyers are holding their breath.

On a similar note, WalMart had grand openings of 41 stores across the US on Wednesday, represent hundreds of millions in investment along with thousands of new jobs added to our economy.

Many stores are newer, larger facilities replacing older and smaller stores, but some are completely new markets.

Sam Walton's entrepreneurial spirit lives on in the company's management today.

Yes, these grand openings had been planned for at least a couple weeks for the final scheduling, but the ground work started 8 to 24 months ago for most of these locations.

As is often the case, the US economy is not a single behemoth, but is composed of many parts, sectors, regions, and industries, with each having different cycles and market influences.

Home-based businesses if not flourishing in the current economy overall, is at lease showing expansion with many taking the plunge to start a new enterprise now.

In my situation, I never have to worry about a pink slip, as I can only be laid off by one customer at a time, and am not subject to a corporate buyout/downsizing, etc.

JMNSHO!

It's Time To Look For Problems

Hello My Friends,

In a time of war and bad economy, it's time to look for problems. If you can find a solution to a problem by starting a business, you'll grow a thriving business.

Here's the deal right now....

1. People are looking to save money on all services.

If you can operate a business from home offering the same services as brick and mortar enterprises, you can often times charge lower prices. In a time when people are watching what they spend, you can profit.

2. People are looking for new employment and money making opportunities.

Less face it, the economy is going to take longer to bounce back than we think. Currently in the United States, 60,000 jobs are lost each month. In short, the world needs entrepreneurs to create new industries and opportunities for others. If you can create a REAL way for others to make $$$$, you'll profit.

Ex. I'm helping people get started selling computers from home using a unique and proven marketing system. It's a real business, if operated from home, gives you distinct advantages. Look at

Ex. #2 My wife loves to sell and bake cakes. As a matter of fact, she won the first place award out of 600 cakes at the state fair. I put together a marketing plan to help her sell the cakes and now she's got more business than she can handle. It's a REAL busines. As a matter of fact, we're now selling the marketing plan to others who want to make extra money by baking.

3. People want to spend more time with loved ones.

If you come up with something to help families spend a fun night out, you'll make a profit. Something as simple as a trivia competition between families will make money.

There are many other problems that others may want to contribute but I think that's the key. If you can solve problems, you can make $$$$.

Good Success!
