email program opinions please >>>>

Hi:

After 10 years I am finally having to give up on my trusty old friend that kept all the virus laden emails at bay....even if I accidentally opened one of them.

I have been using Netscape for my email and the last stable version was 4.76 which is way out of date with today's java, etc.

I don't like MS outlook or outlook express, and have refused to switch to it all these years, so am looking for input of opinions on the other options available to me such as Eudora, Pegasus, Thunderbird, etc.

Your opinions and experiences would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I have used Poco Mail for years, as has my husband, and I wouldn't choose to use anything else. I will say that I much prefer my old version over the newer ones because it offers me options the newer ones don't. I find it much easier to use but it may just be because it's familiar.

I tried tons of email programs before settling on Poco. Pegasus is good but unnecessarily complex and time-consuming but lots of folks like it. Most of the others fall short in one way or another when it comes to being able to do everything an online business person needs...at least that's what I found.

My son uses Thunderbird and loves it. Because of the way I like to work, I found it frustrating so...

Hope this was helpful. Give Poco a try at least and possibly Thunderbird and Pegasus.

A tip: when setting up Pegasus, be sure to read ALL the instructions first or you'll find yourself having chosen wrong at some point to be able to do what you want to with it. Read, make your choices, then put it all together. Good luck!

Chris Anderson, author of The Long Tail and the upcoming book “Free” defines the trend as “The Economics of Abundance and the Price of Zero”... ;)

When it comes out (info in that thread)...

I've been using Macs for several years, I've used Outlook Express, Mail, and Thunderbird, but I've gone the last few years without an e-mail client at all.

I use Cox for internet, so I just log onto the web mail, create folders to save what I want and delete what I don't. I also have g-mail (didn't weigh in on that other thread because I seldom use it) and an iwon account (mostly for spam - when I have to register somewhere, enter a contest or whatever, I use that one so the mail lists send their crap to that account).

I love not having to download everything to an email client. Just save it all on the web. Sure, if my provider loses them I'm out of luck, but with my track record, it's less likely to get lost than if I'd saved it to my machine into any e-mail program.

Just my 2˘.

I would recommend Gmail.

But if you absolutely want a desktop software for emails - go with thunderbird. Its an ok software on its own - but becomes very powerful with all its extensions and add-ons.
