Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay for Plagiarism
First...
If you don't know who Joe Satriani is... SHAME SHAME SHAME Take your shameful self and make good use of Google. Assuming you do know who Joe is, then here's the run down... Joe reckons Coldplay have ripped off his riff. Yep. He reckons they took his riff from "If I could Fly" and added it to their "Vida La Vida". Unlike, Huey Lewis suing Ray Parker Jr for ripping off some part of his song - taking Want A New Drug's melody and using it for Ghostbusters - which I reckon is only audible to those with bionic hearing. This time it's plain for those with ears to ear. As plain as Vanilla Ice's theft of Queen/Bowie's Under Pressure bits. At least, *I* reckon it's plain to hear. It's not the first time they've been accused of plagiarism over this song. http://blogs.reuters.com/fanfare/200...copycat-claim/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUhFL...in_010457.html Funny that the song by the Creaky Boards is called "The Songs I Didn't Write". The Creaky Boards song sounds more like the Coldplay song than the Satch one, at least to me. My guess is that there are a whole lot of songs that sound very similar to these songs. It's not exactly Mozart we're talking about here. The Creaky Boards say that Chris Martin of Coldplay was in the audience at a CMJ Music Fest and saw them play the song. He claims he not there and was recording an album in the UK at the time. One thing's for sure - The Creaky Boards have received almost a million views of their video on youtube since they made the accusation. Their views are coming in fast and furious again because of the Satch accusation. Maybe the publicity angle was their intention all along. I actually think Satch and Coldplay should combine the songs - it sounded better combined to me than either song sounded alone. |
Re: Joe Satriani Sues Coldplayfor Plagiarism
I've never known Joe to go after anyone like this before, so if he's pursuing it now, I guess he figures he's got a good case and I have to say the two songs certainly sound very much alike.
Of course this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XnhFR73wOs shows that Joes tune is similar to another artists. I'm sure it's possible for 2 or more people to come up with the same musical ideas on their own, but how do you prove you've never been influenced by someone elses music? In any case, I love JS and hope he gets what he's looking for here! Steve |
