Wealth versus Independence
Are you looking more for *wealth* or *independence* ?
I think many small business types are looking for independence more than for wealth.... The ability to be your own boss, rather than a "wage slave".... What do you think? - Dien |

Independence. Wealth is only one way to acquire Independence. (DNO) (DNO)

Re: Wealth versus Independence
Wealth.
But of course, with wealth would come independence, so really both would be achieved. The reason I say wealth is that, if I made enough to be independent, I don't think I'd stop. The game of wealth-creation is a fun one I think I'll always play it, whether independence has been achieved or not. - Thomas. > Are you looking more for *wealth* or > *independence* ? > I think many small business types are > looking for independence more than for > wealth.... There is another option...
> Are you looking more for *wealth* or
> *independence* ? Silly question... MONEY!!!, of course. :o) However, I'll happily work for someone, as an employee, under certain conditions. And there are also areas of business I would not go in to because being self employed would going against those conditions. For me, the big thing is RESPONSIBILITY! I'll be your employee and you can be my boss as long as you don't dictate to me about how to do my job... specially if you've never done it. Show me what has to be done, tell me what has to be done, then leave me alone to do it. I'm like the little kid putting shoes on and geting dressed... I CAN DO IT. I'll be the "tea/coffee boy" as long as you only tell me how you like yours and not how to make it... because, if I'm unsure I'll ask. Ask an person in any kind of service industry about the whiners. They don't like them. Why? Cause they tell you, in a sense, how to perform your service. Nothing is ever good enough for them. Their apt to complain about it not matter how good a service your provide and how good a job you do. Yet who is the professional making their living by providing the service? You are, not them. Yet they'll in effect be telling you how to perform. I read somewhere that Japanese directors are such only after having done every job within the company. I can respect that. If one came up to you and mentioned something about your performance or whatnot, they at least know what they're talking about from experience. Show me the responsibility. For this reason I could never work for the goverment in a role that interacts with the public. Ever tried to speak with them? Sheesh. No one is responsible for anything. No one can make a decision. Argh. And I lump responsibility, independence and wealth all together as reasons for doing it on my own... or for someone else as the case may be. Michael Ross. |
PS
I liken it to driving.
And to put that into a Courier context... Tell me where the pick-up is and where the drop-off is and leave me alone to drive there, get the package, drive to the drop-off location and leave it. But don't tell me how to drive. And as I write this and think back to "jobs" I've gravitated towards (like the idea/thought/sound of and some of which I've done), I see they fit this very thing. Dien, you've done some face-to-face selling now... how would you feel about doing it in a shop all day long with the boss watching over your shoulder? Not quite the same, is it? I'll happily start work for you in your commercial laundry, at 4 in the morning, and drive around picking up sheets and other such items from hotels/motels... as long as you give me the "run sheet" and leave me alone to do it. I CAN DO IT. I can be responsible for the laundry. And I relish it. I'll happily deliver your packages... as long as you give me what I need to know and leave me alone to do it. I'll happily drive around all night making sure your shop is locked and no crooks are stealing your stuff... as long as I know which properties are to be patrolled and you leave me alone to do it. I'll happily make sure the campers don't have unattended fires and they don't feed the bears... as long as... well, I'm sure you get the drift by now.... leave me alone to do it. I can handle the responsibility. It's what *I* want. Michael Ross. |
Why don't we (of the male persuasion) ask for directions when we're lost?
Hi Michael,
I could relate to what you're saying! It made me think of "back seat drivers" or "passenger seat drivers".... You know, those who tell you how to drive when they are in the passenger seat or in the back seat.... Once or twice is okay with me, but if it gets too much.... I sometimes have to say light-heartedly, "Uh, who is doing the driving here?" Of course, being your typical male I hate to ask for directions when I'm los-- err, I mean when I'm trying out a creative route to our destination. My previous girlfriends have always had a laugh at this male trait.... :) Sometimes women are very logical, and we guys are quite illogical, though we don't like to admit that it's true.... Err, I mean that it's true every now and then. ;) Yes, I think what you're saying is really a type of independence, though it could be a kind of independence within a job. In a sense, you still have a boss when you're working for yourself, except that you have many bosses, who are your customers.... Though, ironically, I think it gives you more flexibility.... Thanks for sharing your views, Michael! I especially liked the picture you painted of the little boy who insists he can tie his own shoe-laces.... Heheh, I was like that, I bet many of us were.... Thanks... :) Dien |
