Two things to take into account....

Gordon, this is a great topic.... I've been thinking a LOT about this lately....

But first, here's the dialogue from City Slickers....

Curly: You know what the secret of life is?
Mitch: No, what?
Curly: This. (Curly holds up one finger.)
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean s**t.
Mitch: That's great, but what's the one thing?
Curly: That's what you've got to figure out.

Finding that "one thing" to focus on, though, is easier said than done, for many of us.... Which "one thing" you focus on could have a big impact on your future.

In my case, I want to maximize the results of my efforts. I know that if I have a choice of two things to do, one choice will give me a greater return than the other choice.... That's partly because of my own strengths and interests, but ALSO because some activities offer more opportunities than others....

For example, you can choose to try to become a professional actor. As we know, some actors make millions and millions of dollars. But the vast majority of aspiring actors don't make enough to pay the bills....

On the other hand, you could choose to become a professional computer programmer.... If you are able to program (or you can learn), this would generally be more profitable for most people than trying to become an actor....

If you are equally good at acting and computer programming, choosing the computer programming route will be more likely to give you an assured future. That's because of the greater opportunities available in computer programming, compared to the relatively slim opportunities in professional acting....

So.... It's partly about what you like to do, and what you do well.... BUT, it's also about what are the opportunities now.... I think choosing the "one thing" should perhaps take both these factors into account....

Anyhow, those are some thoughts on this topic.... :)
