Domain host recommendations?

Hi folks, it is I. Yes you know... Search your grey cells ;)

Guy at work wants to register a .com.au domain for his business and have it hosted. He understands hr can register it in Australia and have it hosted in the US.

So question is... Who do you recommend for either hosting or .com.au rego and hosting?

Hi Michael,

I've used NetRegistry http://www.netregistry.com.au for .com.au domains before, and didn't have any problems.

I've seen Crazy Domains http://www.crazydomains.com.au advertised everywhere, but I've never tried them.

Crazy Domains' prices seem to be lower - though, as I said, I haven't tried them yet...

Best wishes!

Dien

Most people in this discussion seem to recommend NetRegistry over Crazy Domains...

The Whirlpool forum is generally pretty good for researching any Aussie-related tech/computer/internet stuff... :)

Hi Michael!

How are you doing these days?

Thanks for asking about domain and hosting.

Question: what kind of a website does your friend want? Owning a simple brochure type website is completely different than running an ecommerce website.

For simple websites, I recommend Dreamhost.com just because of their low prices. And you can find coupons for them on google that will further reduce the prices. But I don't recommend them for ecommerce websites. Or websites that you expect will receive a lot of traffic (over 100 users per hour). Similar to dreamhost is hostgator.com. Good for simple websites. Not good for traffic heavy websites.

A better more expensive host is: Mediatemple.com. I host quite a few sites with them. Coupon: http://mdtm.pl/VbMWCr (gives you $25 off as well as gives me $25 off from my monthly billing if you signup.) Mediatemple is good because your sites won't go down if you get mentioned in the New York Times or something and get a lot of people to visit you.

Re: Domain host recommendations?

Thanks Dien,

He was asking me about Crazy Domains. I did a quick "review search" and found Loads of issues with them - mainly their uptime is atrocious. Stacks written on whirlpool forums about how Bad they are.

I remembered Dotster but have found they are recently gone down hill in a big way and people are jumping ship like nuts.

I suggested to him to use Doteasy when he first asked but at the time he wanted a all in one provider - domain reg and hosting. But he discovered most US hosts cannot register .au names.

Thanks Ankesh,

He wants his site to have a small catalog of items. At this stage let's say a dozen. And those items to be bought from the site using a payment processor. At the moment he is thinking eway http://www.eway.com.au cause PayPal is too expensive. I told him the processor fees are a cost of doing business and to factor that into his price.

So as I see it, he doesn't need full shopping cart scripting available from his host as he is using eway's cart. But nor does he want to pay $20 a month for hosting. As usual, wanting all the goodies without paying for them.

Thanks, I shall pass on all this info for him to investigate some more.

There was a host I was using years ago who was quite excellent. Cannot recall who they were now. Anyways...

Michael

Re: Domain host recommendations?

Michael - I generally try to register domains one place and have a hosting account somewhere else. IMHO it's much safer that way.

I also always recommend that the person/company manages their own domain registration; if you don't have access to the registrar from your own account, it's like leaving the keys to your front door with a total stranger; your online business depends on you being able to manage and control the domain registration.

Best
Margaret
