A meeting with the Commodore....

That quote is an inspiration! :) I've recently been reading about Cornelius Vanderbilt (known to his friends as "Commodore"), who became the wealthiest man in the USA in the 19th century. He donated $1 million to what is now known as Vanderbilt University, for the cause of education, even though he was not well-educated himself. Vanderbilt first made his money with steamships, ferrying passengers and cargo along the coasts and rivers of the United States. He spoke the language of the trade -- his speech was raw, he swore and cursed a lot. The elite crowd shunned him because of his uncouth ways (even though he could buy many of them many times over). To hear him talk, one wouldn't have guessed that he was the richest guy in the United States, because he didn't fit the image of what people expected! He achieved a kind of greatness.... Though many others may not have realized it from his demeanour, if they met him. :) - Dien |
