I use Subscription Rocket. I also use pop-under
boxes with great success. I have purchased subscribers through Lead Factory for about 20 cents each. My last purchase was 11,000 subscribers. Lead Factory puts subscription boxes on hight traffic websites and the boxes offer several different ezines (with short descriptions). I can get 200-300 new subscriber in a good day with Lead Factory but the average is much lower. Another tool I use is a free list building tutorial. People answer a few questions about their list building objectives/experiences, etc. From that they are given a tailored list building tutorial via email. At the same time, as part of taking the tutorial they subscribe to my ezine. This sends me a steady trickle of subscribers every day.

As Julie mentioned, articles are a good source of new subscribers. I give publishers permission to use my articles in their ezines, in ebooks and on their websites. I have articles posted on prominent websites which have been there for 4 years or more :-) These do send me traffic.
