Here's a way which works. Go down to any kind of fair or market - anyplace where many different kinds of products are being sold from stalls.... Bring a small notepad and a pen with you.
The technique is this. Just walk around the fair, noticing where the crowds are gathering. You'll see some stalls are nearly empty, while other stalls almost always have a crowd gathered in front of them. Then, all you do is this - simply notice what's attracting the crowd.
At a recent collectibles fair I went to, I noticed that a lot of the popular stalls were people selling old military medals. I wouldn't have even known there was a demand for old military medals if I hadn't walked around that fair with my notepad and pen.
Joe Cossman used this technique to get one of his big hit products as well. He was at a trade show, showing miniature paintings - with practically no interest in his booth. But the booth next to him - they always had a big crowd.
What were they selling? Miniature shrunken heads!
Seeing the big crowd those shrunken heads were attracting, Joe Cossman did a deal with the shrunken head guy to market his shrunken heads. He apparently sold a LOT of these shrunken heads through gas stations. The total? In the end, Cossman ended up selling 1.6 MILLION of them!
That's one way to discover "hot" products.... Just wander around, and pay attention to what you see!
