Hi Daniel :)
My advice is to seek out sites that are complimentary, not competitive (sites you dont mind linking back to as a resource for your visitors, perhaps). You can start by plugging your primary keyword phrase into the search engine and looking at the top ten results.
If they have message boards, post there - including your signature (using "link text" is a plus - meaning that that your link looks like: My Primary Keyword Phrase instead of http://www.SelfStartersWeeklyTips.com)
Submit
content: tips, articles, testimonials/reviews
Get listed in their directory, etc
Also - set up an About Me eBay profile, a Ryze.com profile, check out Ecademy.com too. (high traffic, high profile, frequently spidered sites that offer free membership ;) )
Your goal should be to get as many Inbound Links as possible, using your Primary Keyword Phrase as the "link text", and to do this on websites that are spidered often... I believe keyword relevancy and PageRank might be taken into consideration as well.
