Folks can end up getting bitten when bartering things simply because, if the gov gets wind of it, a lot of things are taxable even tho' it's a swap. Best be up to date on the regulations and know what you're doing so it doesn't end up costing you new price for used stuff or more than you could buy it at retail for out of a store (and in a lot of cases without paying tax on it).
