You are definitely right in that the best way to learn writing copy is by hand-writing out old adverts, preferably profitable ones...

The late, great, Gary Halbert. This site has about 200 newsletters, each in individual browsers. Make sure you download them all (because you never know when the site might go down) and if you have the time, write out all of the newsletters BY HAND.
