Thanks Glenn,
I too, had never heard of Groupon before, and this is going to be an interesting study in "guerrilla" type marketing with a nice carrot dangling for the winner of the contest. If she is selected, I have no doubt she'll be able to do it.
As for being the ONE, my contribution has only been to make sure she understands that Groupon is a BUSINESS, and as much fun as they have doing business...it is still going to be about the bottom line.
From a start-up or relatively new business perspective, Groupon is leaning heavily on so-called NEW marketing technologies with social networking at their center.
It is guerrilla marketing, no doubt, and whoever is selected to "live off groupons" for a year, will generate some interesting, low cost, media and/or advertising for them.
They had to submit a couple of additional things along with the video, so I'm sure all of these finalists are very smart young people, and any of them could probably pull it off.
Her "hedge" might be the fact she's been around the world already (literally on Semester At Sea), speaks 3 languages (and understands a couple of more), has a great attitude and knows we humans can tolerate a high level of discomfort. Plus she has a very persuasive personality and is very likeable.
IF she is the finalist, we'll follow her adventures on the Groupon Blog, I'm sure. Let's see how this marketing "stunt" helps Groupon grow.
Gordon
PS. Other than reminding her that Groupon is a BUSINESS, I had/have nothing to do with her entry.

P.S. - Niche group marketing is amazing. I have no clue what a "groupON"
is. None of them explain.
Which makes this an INSIDER club type of thing.
Bet the company does well with this promotion.
