First thing. Like your mind-mapping, when you WRITE/draw...especially pics...you access both sides of the old noggin, right? Left/Right brain integration...

You know this, so I'll spare the on-lookers the class in neuroscience...

But now that you have actually done a pictogrigm, the neural pathway has been constructed, the bridge that gaps the synapses has been built...
and it gets easier and easier to access and to USE this brain stored cargo.
