Brazil was hard because of the language problem, she didn't heed my advice and study before she went, so she struggled for months (thank goodness she had already graduated HS up here so the classes didn't matter).
Once she had command of the language, she flourished and today speaks Spanish and Portuguese with a smattering of other languages.
I think being able to first COMMUNICATE effectively and second, INFLUENCE via your communication is THE business survival skill.

Your daughter's "Semester at Sea" experience sounds pretty awesome!
And "jumping in" to studying 10 months in Brazil, without speaking Portuguese... Definitely a "sink or swim" type of approach! But I bet she learned (and grew) a lot...
You're right in that communication is very very important...
And not just being able to string a few words together. Anyone who can talk can do that...
But so many people just don't know how to string a few words together to influence others...
Words are the key!
