Although I may not HATE them, they can be downright annoying.

I tried exitblaze on my site for a few days. I got tired of closing extra windows every time I fired up my browser. I have my main site as my home page, so every time I opened my browser, I was triggering the pop-under. I don't know if it generated any extra traffic or sales, but I scrapped the code after a few days.

I'll have to rethink the idea of using an exit pop-up to offer a free report to collect email addresses. Many folks are doing this. It doesn't seem to be quite as annoying...at least, the pop-up is offering a freebie, instead of shoving a website in your face.
