I read about this in one of the Guerilla Marketing Books by Jay Conrad Levinson:
An entrepreneur in Wyoming buys carpet remnants from manufacturers.
Then, he takes out a small ad in the University of Wyoming newspaper, offering carpets precut to fit the standard 10 x 12 campus dorm room. His average markup is 500%. In the spring, he buys them back -- cheap -- and stores them for the summer.
Every fall he has a fresh batch of customers.
