The fires are pretty big.

They're not too close to me (I live in Melbourne), but we do get some smoke occasionally, depending on which way the wind is blowing. It's a lot worse in Sydney, where there are more fires, and where they are closer to the city...

I've read that a lot of people don't realize, Australia is a big place. Its size is roughly the same as the USA's "lower 48". It's the 7th largest country in the world, by land size (USA is bigger partly because of Alaska - Alaska is pretty big).

I think we don't realize because most of the interior is desert, so the population is not as large because of that...

Sadly, they believe some threatened animals may have become extinct due to the fires...
