Default I don't think poker is gambling, less a game of chance and as you teach...

oGlenn,

Great stuff. Poker is about reading people, some luck, but one can walk away with significant winnings, without being the big winner at the table.

It cost me about 1200 dollars, took almost 18 months, but when I left my first submarine to go to a different one, I walked away with over $5,000.00 which was won in about 5 days time at the poker table.

The crew was baffled. They called it luck. It was a personal sting operation I had planned.

In addition to the 5k bux, I had 3 months of pay waiting, plus 3 months of chatteling my partner from the other crew had done. We had two crews on the sub, each one onboard for 90 days.

Only qualified crew could get into the poker game. The day after I qualified, I dropped about 200 at the poker table in a couple of hours. I was fresh meat.

Over the course of the next two patrols I became a casual player, always losing and bemoaning my luck, while letting crew members TEACH me how to play. In port, while off the boat, there was a weekly game too. I nabbed the best players on the boat and offered them bribes to teach me.

Over the course of 6 months, I learned every TELL, every strategy, every opinion they had about each other.

So, I waited. Patiently. With about 10 days left to our patrol, I made the move. We knew the last 5 days were hectic, a lot of drills, cleaning, inspections...day 10 to day 5 were the money days at the poker table.

I started my win streak with small amounts and lots of joy and celebration. Funny thing, all of these guys were BEAMING at my success, because they all felt they were my mentor, and in fact, even protective of me. They enjoyed seeing their student win.

Then the last couple of days got insane, 65 guys wanted a seat, but only 6 or 7 were available and the winner of the last night, claimed a seat. I never gave mine up.

Well, by the end, pots were getting up into the hundreds and even a couple of over a thousand dollars. And I cashed in (or out) big time. The Chief of the Boat (one of my mentors, at a cost of a bottle of Chivas Regal) took pride in cutting me the check for over 6500 dollars, he said it was the largest check he ever did. Many guys would make 2 to 3k a patrol, those pros...but few ever got above 4k.

I bought a lot of bottles of booze before I left, gave little gifts and trinkets out...THANKING everyone for being such a help.
