Default Re: 100 Ways to Kill a Concept: Why Most Ideas Get Shot Down! Excellent read...

PHIL THANK YOU for this find.

I just downloaded the document to my desktop.

They had me at "Cogito Ergo Sum." (I THINK therefore I am) Rene Descartes

Very succinct and Liberating.

Just one of my favorite lines

"Most of the time, somewhere along the way, a persons idea gets changed, before their concept transaction is completed."

I like the metaphor of the "concept transaction". I usually think of it in terms of "giving birth" to an idea.

They hit the nail on the head when they said that it was FEAR that kills more ideas Before they are able to be "sold" to others.

They could have actually FOCUSED more on that point to hammer it home. Most people, spend a great amount of time trying to sell their concept to others...when in fact they have never really sold THEMSELVES on the idea first....

Thus at the 1st sign of Resistance or any one of the 100 idea killers described in the doc, the Idea is DEAD. In fact the idea was never fully alive as they themselves had nibbled away at it's full potency, looong before they had to sell it to others.

(I'm guilty of this and struggle to FIGHT my inner critic constantly)

The converse of what I stated above would be to breathe life into your idea, 1st in your own mind. SELL YOURSELF 1st on it. Once sold you will and SHOULD have an Excitement and passion in your tone when discussing it with others. The Chances of it surviving are a lot greater.

Actually as I write this I believe this concept was discussed in a book I have called The 80/20 Individual by Robert Koch. I believe Koch called Ideas "memes". But I digress...I sense a tangent coming on.

Another concept I loved was the "Dangerous" idea concept:

It is also reassuring for some people to take the daring part out of a concept and grind the rough edges, then sandpaper it to death.Oscar Wilde put it this way: "A concept that isn't dangerous is hardly worth calling a concept at all." It is often the shocking part, the frightening part, the unknown element of risk, whcih makes a great new concept in the first place. (pg 9 100waysKillconcept.pdf)

I have heard this "Dangerous" idea concept expressed as "Outrageous" or any other adjective. Specifically, Jon Spoelstra in one of his books talked about "Pushing the Envelope" and if his staff did not LAUGH or say his idea or proposal was ridiculous then it was not a good or "Outrageous" idea. (Thanks Ankesh for referring Jon's work in previous posts. GREAT BOOKS)

So I will have to go through the file a couple of times. But Thanks again Phil for Valuable find!

Cheers

Duane
