Default A "Utopian" future -- for real??

Geothermal energy? 4,000mph trains?
This isn't a direct link to what I would like your opinions on, but this girl describes it better than I ever could... If you watch the vid, let me know what you think...

Default Socialist Utopian - fantasize and you too can imagine the future

Kbayer,

Ah, Zeitgeist II.

Geothermal Is possible. Currently there is a Project in Oz to power 30,000 homes with it. A small Test project, if you will.

4,000mph, is possible. But not with Current Technology. And to set up a trans global link as proposed... damn, we can't even agree in which side of the road to drive, nor which gauge track to run trains on. Unlikely we'll agree on this any time soon.

But you can do likewise. Imagine any fantasy form of transport for the future. Ding. You're just as prophetic as they. Simple, yeah?

However, the idea of the Venus Project is really just a Socialist Utopia by another name. Where none work, except for the good of others and themselves.

Whoopsy. Someone HAS to build the darn things. Someone HAS to maintain them. Right?

The old bloke reckons without Work/Money we would find other incentives. I beg to differ. I see plenty of people on Sit Down money - they have free housing and free money - essentially, not needing to lift a finger for anything. They don't Strive ahead. They don't become musicians to Give their music away. They don't become artists to give their art away - someone HAS to work to make the canvas they pain on, right?

Reminds me of their Star Trek episode where they encountered a planet where the people no longer had to work. They could devote their time to intellectual and artistic pursuits. Did away with Unnecessary jobs. Dang, who could fix their machine now it went a bit broke.

If these people so want to "work for others" I've got plenty of work around my house they can do for free. But, we both know they won't come around. They mean for Others to do the work... while they, ahem, wear overalls and live in the farm house and run the farm. Sound familiar.

As with ZG I, there were some logic flaws and the usual - said with authority without proof of backup. But such is to be expected. In this Addendum, part one and two were interesting. 3 and 4 started getting into too much of the "we are all one, let's do it for each other" stuff - and it seemed overly pushed, to me.

But, overall, something most people could do with watching, even if just to get them thinking differently.

BTW, there is so much going on in the world on a daily basis, a half hour news blip at the end of the day cannot cover it all. Which means, Someone is Selecting what news you will see. That alone should be reason enough to not watch it.

Also, if you want to download it onto your computer for later viewing, use www.keepvid.com and one URL to enter is http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...05277695921912

http://keepvid.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2...05277695921912 should be what you need. The Flash version is 290meg and overall it goes for a couple of hours.

Default Re: A "Utopian" future -- for real??

Geothermal isn't a test project any longer. OIT in Klamath Falls, OR has been using it for quite some time (several years) to power their residence halls. In fact, OIT is now building new residence halls and creating classroom studies and projects in geothermal energy. That's only one example I could quote.

It may or may not be utopian but it is happening now. Science fiction notwithstanding, a lot of things that were 'futuristic' are now reality.

As for the 'no work' thing...we're already enroute to that pipe dream. Robots will, eventually, do many of the 'dirty/dangerous tasks' that people now do. The real challenge will be to adapt to the changing times...and they're coming fast.

The sit on their butts and lazy folks will fall off the edges of society as society pushes ahead with ever-increasing technological changes. One either keeps up or gets shoved aside. That has been shown time and time again in this old world.

Initially the hordes of folks that are needed when technology is in it's infancy won't be needed as tech advances. The real test of human ingenuity will come when we have to provide meaningful activity for the masses. Not an easy task and it will sort out folks into the haves and have nots even more than we see today in the world.

The one certainty in life, other than death (and that isn't so certain either these days), is change. Labels are just that...and just as useless ultimately.
