Default Have we reached critical mass for the PETER PRINCIPLE?

From wikipedia:

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by educator Laurence J. Peter and published in 1969. It states that the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence".

Has the USA reached critical mass, and the reactor is HOT?

We would hear those words on the nuclear submarine, meaning the reactor was coming online. A period of time which required full attention. We don't want the guy in the Nuke area falling asleep during this time.

Professor Peter proffered his principle and the 1970's was a time to see it in action.

Today, perhaps, our Nation is full of leaders who have risen to their levels of incompetence. From the top down.

Recently had a plumber in. He needed to Google instructions on what I thought was common plumber knowledge.

Have you had a service person out recently? Do any of them know what they are doing? A neighbor had a furnace problem, biggest name it town came out and were stymied, thank goodness they had google.

There was a time when the friendly SEARS repairman (I lived next door to one) was the go-to guy for any appliance problem. That guy could fix anything, but then he had a lot of training and skills.

I could be wrong, way off here. But I see incompetence everywhere. The guy at the oil change place not tightening the filter (true story), the guy changing tires and not tightening the lug nuts (true story)...the cable guy who forgot to plug in the modem before he started testing it (TRUE)...

Holy Macaroly. Has the Peter Principle been fully realized in our Governments; police who shoot first and ask questions later, the road crew who skips over the big potholes and fixes the small ones, the Mayor who smokes dope (choose from many mayors and dopes).

Is there anyone out there, providing a service which we used to be able to rely on, at least that they knew what they were talking about, who is competent or have they all risen to their highest levels of the Peter Principle?

I wonder.

IF there is a reverse Peter Principle, which would be, incompetence starts at the top and trickles down in golden showers of blissful ignorance?

Default A Peter Principle Plumbing Story

Thanks Gordon,

I Read the Peter Principle when the book came out.

I Believe it.

I see it in action - Everywhere. (I Recently contacted 2 different agents for the
same auto insurance Quote. The owner of one company said I should get the
SAME Quote from the other agent. BUT the other Quote was MUCH HIGHER. I
put that Down to INCOMPETENCE.)

You will LUV This Gordon.

I called for a Plumber to fix a small drip in the pump room.

The IDIOT did not have any 3/4 inch copper Pipe on his truck.

The bill to fix a leak was over 800 bucks!

Why?

Cuz he charged me 200.00 for the 90 minutes HE SPENT driving to the Supply House and Back. (I live far away from everything.)

AND
THEN
While
I
was Paying him.

(He insisted on getting Paid before he left. Claimed he gets stiffed if he doesn't
get the moolah right away. Can't imagine why.)

The Clown started telling me about his hobby.

RACING Exotic Motorcycles!

This Discussion of what he was going to do with HIS SHARE of my 800 bucks
REALLY ENDEARED ME to him and his company.

So much so.

That I plan to NEVER Call them again.

AND Tell everyone I know My HORROR STORY.

Thanks,
Glenn

Thumbs up Re: Have we reached critical mass for the PETER PRINCIPLE?

Gordon,

The INCOMPETENCE FACTOR is everywhere today due to DISTRACTIONS. TV, the cell phone, society is up to their necks in it. Get used to it. It's a FACT of life in the second decade of the 21st Century. Our generation will be one of the first to succumb to the fallout of those less prepared young ones coming after us. I taught public high school for 12 years. Also undergraduate college students for three years. My first two years teaching in the GHETTO, I had three kids using one book :-o) !!! The only way to get around this issue is to become a knowledge factory unto your self. This situation will not go away and will only get worse. The time we live in is called "Kali Yuga." There is only one book available today that tells you what happens during this age we live in. I suggest you get a copy and read it. FASCINATING HISTORICAL STUDY. It would make for an awesome special feature short report. Keep up the great work observing the confounding times. Old school music (30s through 60s, helps to overcome the disappointment if and when you need it.)

Glenn,

Kali Yuga STARTED upon the death of Krishna over 5,000 years ago. The 70 years you mentioned is not true according to the ancient Sanskrit texts. It's not something you could find on YouTube. I've studied under the TOP Gurus in India and know the 5,000 year Kali Yuga rule to be the honest to goodness TRUTH. There is also a group of Astrologers in India who know the future. They are called the Bhrigu Astrologers. I find that YouTube is a good source. But getting it from the horses mouth or your spiritual teacher is much, MUCH BETTER :-o) !!!
