Default Something I noticed on Youtube

Over the last several days I have noticed a number of people just posting videos of themselves going on long international flights.

Some of these videos have had millions of views!

One of the most notable is Sam Chui...
Here is one that has over 37 million views...

https://youtu.be/zeCphtjSgtg

Sam has over 2 million subscribers.

I would imagine there are other niches that have a lot of viewers.

Can you imagine the money Sam is making from all the views of his videos?

Just as a follow up...

Some folks make as much as $5000 per million views of videos... I suspect Sam is helping to fund his travel adventures with all the views he gets !

Hi Millard,

I'm one of those guys who sometimes watches those types of videos!

I didn't know of Sam, though...

Actually, I used to watch a lot of flight attendant channels... Partly because I love flying. Also, it seems to me that, in general, pilots can't film on the plane, whereas flight attendants can (depending on the airline)...

I'd link to some, but all the flight attendants making the YouTube channels I was following have been furloughed, sadly. (They all worked for American Airlines, I'm guessing because they're probably more flexible about allowing flight attendants to film on the plane compared to other airlines...)

Ah, what the heck... Here's one I used to watch... "Jetting Julia"...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkR...YZh96RQShizu6w

Also, "Fly with Stella"...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMZ...lG9rwyugDgRr5g

The only other channel I follow which is like this (which is not a flight attendant one) is Noel Philips'... He's a British guy, who seems to have money to fly everywhere, and is crazy about travel.

I saw one video where he flew from the UK to Canada, waited a few hours, then flew back! I don't think he even left the airport... he was there for the journey, not the destination!

He doesn't get nearly as many views as Sam Chui's, though. I originally followed him because he used to post "full flight" videos, where he would film the whole flight... He doesn't do that any more, though. I used to have them sometimes running in the background when I was working (so I could pretend I was working on a plane)! Okay, maybe I'm a little weird...

Here's his channel...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2O...Zf9FkUAepz9Atg

And for those as crazy as me, here's one of his "full flight" videos... This one is from London, to Perth, Australia. If you want to watch from beginning to end, the whole flight (and video) is over 17 hours...!

Most of the video is the view looking out the window, but when he gets served snacks or meals, he films that, too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEh4_QKxo_4

Noel used to have a paid channel of just full flight videos in high resolution, I think he hosted it on Vimeo... Yeah, I was a paid subscriber. I don't think he does it any more, though (again, maybe proving that service was quite "niche")...!

Best wishes,

Dien

Thanks !

I'll look into some of these videos.

Cheers,

Wow! What a great way to make a passion pay for your lifestyle! It seems to me as if he must have got permission or some kind of agreement to show staff, etc. Intriguing ...

Meantime, we can't even walk over the border between Scotland and England at the moment (and it's an imaginary line!!!) Strange times we're living in.

Hi Margaret,

These are definitely odd times... I guess we're all figuring out our own ways to cope...

I count my blessings... A friend of mine (in Texas) had a scary time... Her mother was sick in hospital, and because of the coronavirus restrictions, she couldn't even visit her!

I don't remember the details (I don't think her mother had Covid, but was there for something else), but I know she managed to get her mother out of hospital and I think everything is okay now... But it's a scary thought that people you love could leave us, and you may not even be able to visit them...

As you might know, my wife and I had a baby daughter back in June. During our stay in hospital, no family could visit! So I'm sure our experience was very different from the experience of many other parents in more "normal" times...

I hope you stay safe and well in Scotland!

- Dien

Default Another quirky thing... Airport webcams...

Another (weird?) habit I sometimes have is watching live airport webcams... I've always loved watching those huge commercial planes take off! (To me, it's still a kind of miracle...)

I also like seeing the inside of airports, where possible... (I think I just like the feeling that I'm going somewhere...)

Anyway, here are a few of my favorites... (How good it is depends on the time of day, as these are live webcams... They're less interesting in the middle of the night, local time!)

Dusseldorf Airport, Germany (multiple cameras you can choose from)
https://www.dus.com/de-de/erlebnis-dus/webcams

Nagasaki Airport, Japan
http://airportwebcams.net/cams/nagasaki-webcam.html

Naha Airport, Japan
https://airportwebcams.net/cams/naha-webcam.html

Miami Airport (good when it works, but doesn't always work)
https://www.miamiairportcam.com

There's even a website devoted to Airport webcams...

http://airportwebcams.net

Not sure if there is a good business angle here... Just thought I'd share, anyway...

When I watch, it's usually as "background" when I'm working... I have a (getting old) 27-inch iMac, so can fit the video/webcam into part of the (large) screen. I also sometimes work with 2 laptops (one is a very cheap one), and I sometimes run videos or webcams on the cheap laptop as "background scenery", while I work on the other one...

Best wishes,

Dien

Oh, Dien - sorry, I missed reading about your baby daughter; many congratulations!

We're trying to be as careful as possibly; one of our friends had Covid (not badly enough to go to hospital but enough that she lost a lot of weight and had a really rough time.) So that was within 200m of our home.

At the end of June my hubby had a heart problem and now we're only risking the absolute minimum of outside contacts. He's fine, well, active and in great good humour but still on loads of medication so it makes sense not to complicate his recovery. We also have a family member (34 years old, with three young children) who's got a terminal cancer diagnosis. They live in England and it would be lovely to have been able to go and see them. However, they didn't need us to add to their stress, so we stayed home. They're in our thoughts and prayers each and every waking moment.

It's good to drop in here from time to time to see how everyone's getting on. I'm going to go and watch some live airport feeds now - the skies above us here seem particularly quiet at the moment (or else I'm slowly getting deaf!) so it will be good to see some activity.

Best wishes all round,
Margaret
