Default "NO soup for you!"

Some may recognize this as a line from the TV show "Seinfeld"... About the "Soup Nazi" who everyone had to defer to, in order to get his incredibly delicious soup...

What you might not know is that the "Soup Nazi" was based on a real guy!

In fact, many of the stories in Seinfeld were based on real events...

A few years ago, I read the Kindle Single "My Seinfeld Year" by Fred Stoller. Stoller had worked as a writer on Seinfeld for just one season, and managed to write one episode, and contributed a story in another episode, if I remember right...

What was illuminating was he emphasized how Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld would encourage the writers to mine their own lives as the source of the stories that ended up in Seinfeld!

(Each episode required four stories - one story for each of the main characters. These stories would then be interwoven together...)

I think Fred Stoller's story was "The Soup"... For those who know "Seinfeld," it's the story where another comedian, Kenny Bania, gives Jerry a brand new Armani suit, and the "deal" is, in return, Jerry will buy him lunch. When they meet for lunch, Kenny just orders a soup... And then he says, it doesn't count, because he only ordered a soup, so Jerry still owes him lunch!

Apparently, this really happened to Fred Stoller (who was also a stand up comedian)...

All this is a preamble to this video I just came across... You'll see interviews with many writers, as well as with Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, about so many of the real stories that the stories in Seinfeld were based on!

I think this is one of the main reasons that Seinfeld stood out from so many other sitcoms...

Sometimes, real life is stranger than fiction! Instead of "made up" events, you had a kernel of truth in so much of what appeared on screen!

Without further ado... here is the video I'm referring to! (Seinfeld fans will love it...)

It's also interesting from a "writer's" point of view... How so much great writing, and of course great humor, comes from a kernel of truth...!

Cheers,

Dien
