Default The history of entrepreneur magazine and it's biz "kits" ?

I recently read that the founder of entrepreneur magazine got his start by selling business + work at home kits aka bizopps and I've been doing google searches and cant seem to find any info about who the founder is, his story, and how the magazine got its start.

I'm also trying to locate any ads that the founder supposedly used to sell these bizopp "kits", but I really cant seem to find anything at all. I'm actually looking for any of these ads because he used a special "Double your money back guarantee" that used special "conditions" and I desperately need to get my hands on it for a project I'm getting ready to launch right now.

If anyone can help me get my hands on the ads or knows anything about the history of the mag and its founder I'd love to talk to you.

Thanks

Hi Mitchell,

It's a fascinating story... But be prepared to be shocked...

From one article (which was published in 1986)...

-----
The founder of Los Angeles-based Entrepreneur magazine, Chase Revel, was arrested Thursday at his Pacific Palisades house on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, forgery and perjury, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said.

Revel was convicted 20 years ago of two bank robberies and three attempted bank robberies in Houston and Las Vegas under his given name, John Leonard Burke.

...

That palimony suit, filed by Kristin Barrett-Whitney, alleged, among other things, that Revel, the author of a number of books on how to start small businesses, was actually Burke, the convicted bank robber. It also indicated that Revel had used the name Jacques Victor Baron, and as Baron had been convicted of mail fraud in a small business scheme in 1972.

Rooker said Thursday that he had confirmed that Revel, the author, was indeed the same man as Burke, the robber, and Baron, the perpetrator of a mail fraud scheme.

From another article (published this year, 2011)...

-----
Chase Revel, who started Entrepreneur in the early 1970s, was a leading purveyor of goods and services related to the swift acquisition of wealth. His published works include 184 Businesses Anyone Can Start and Make a Lot of Money and 168 More Businesses Anyone Can Start and Make a Lot of Money. Revel's ideas ran the gamut from the seductive and legal to the nefarious and illegal. In 1966 he was sentenced to four years in prison under his given name, John Leonard Burke, for attempting to rob four banks in Houston in one day, according to articles published 20 years later by the Los Angeles Times. Revel (then Burke) hired helpers to deliver letters warning bank tellers that their children had been kidnapped. (Revel researched which employees had school-age kids.) The notes stated that the children would be returned only if the tellers surrendered large canvas bags stuffed with cash. In fact, no children had been snatched, and the scheme collapsed almost immediately.

...

After moving on to other pursuits, Revel continued to have scrapes with the authorities. As recently as 2006 he denied wrongdoing and paid $27,500 in a settlement of civil allegations by the Federal Trade Commission that he created false advertising for Gero Vita dietary supplements.

His life story is almost like a movie (and many of the things he's done are not things I'd recommend emulating)...

I only found this stuff out for myself recently. I had no idea!

Here's another article I found about Chase Revel / John Leonard Burke (founder of Entrepreneur magazine) - with a lot more details of his various "schemes"...

This would be hard to believe - if it didn't come from multiple authoritative sources...!

By the way, you CAN be a success, while staying ethical...

There are many highly ethical entrepreneurs, who are also very successful as well...

Best wishes,

His story really could be a movie... I almost can;t believe what I just read is true. The guy sounds like a total con artist, and I'm definitely not trying to go in that direction.

I was mainly interested because he wrote a particular "conditional" guarantee that I really wanted to use for my current project and add to my swipe file.

If anyone has any back order issues of entrepreneur magazine from the 90's, or has any knowledge about his advertisements or has swipes of any of his letters or ads PLEASE let me know. I'm extremely eager to get my hands on these.

Thanks

We've had a few losses from software updates, and attacks, but for the most part Dien Rice has a done a great job with curating the content, he even as the early stuff from Dave Bancroft's forum and various other forums.

Of course, some of the stuff is dated, or has become irrelevant but the solid advice from so many people, especially the first five years, is absolutely worthy of taking the time to search for it. Maybe someday, we'll put together a BEST OF SOWPUB report.

If you think WOW about Revel, just imagine if you knew the skinny ON ____________________ (many well known gurus).

Don't stay under too long, you'll get the bends, but enjoy your finds down below.

Hi,

Yeah, when I found out about Chase Revel/John Burke and the real founding of Entrepreneur magazine, I was stunned!

One thing many people don't realize is that Entrepreneur magazine has a trademark on the word "Entrepreneur", and has been very litigious in suing any small business using that word...!

(Yes, it's affected me... My first commercial website had the word "Entrepreneur" in the domain name... But I think because I was based outside the US, I escaped any great harm...)

I noticed they don't seem to go after the big guys, though, the ones with money. Just the little ones.

I believe in respecting trademarks, but I do believe Entrepreneur magazine oversteps the mark. (It's as if "Apple" started suing any companies selling ripe red fruit and calling them "apples", because they own the trademark "Apple.") I think that's why Entrepreneur magazine don't go after any of the "big guys" though, as they'd be more likely to lose...

Entrepreneur Magazine – Trademark Bully?
http://lizerbramlaw.com/2013/07/11/e...ademark-bully/

(By the way, I also once got a "cease and desist" from Enterprise Rent-a-Car, again because of a domain name/website I had... But I got them to back down. Such is the game of business! It helps to get an education in how the law works, to understand precedent and case law, etc... I'm self-taught...)

Best wishes,

Dien

Hi Mitchell

I have Entrepreneur Magazines all the way back to 1979.

I looked at a couple of the issues from about 1980 and found ads that may be of an interest to you.

But they are too large to attach hear so if you e-mail me I will be more than happy to send them to you as e-mail attachments.
