Default Have we reached critical mass for the PETER PRINCIPLE?

From wikipedia:

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by educator Laurence J. Peter and published in 1969. It states that the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence".

Has the USA reached critical mass, and the reactor is HOT?

We would hear those words on the nuclear submarine, meaning the reactor was coming online. A period of time which required full attention. We don't want the guy in the Nuke area falling asleep during this time.

Professor Peter proffered his principle and the 1970's was a time to see it in action.

Today, perhaps, our Nation is full of leaders who have risen to their levels of incompetence. From the top down.

Recently had a plumber in. He needed to Google instructions on what I thought was common plumber knowledge.

Have you had a service person out recently? Do any of them know what they are doing? A neighbor had a furnace problem, biggest name it town came out and were stymied, thank goodness they had google.

There was a time when the friendly SEARS repairman (I lived next door to one) was the go-to guy for any appliance problem. That guy could fix anything, but then he had a lot of training and skills.

I could be wrong, way off here. But I see incompetence everywhere. The guy at the oil change place not tightening the filter (true story), the guy changing tires and not tightening the lug nuts (true story)...the cable guy who forgot to plug in the modem before he started testing it (TRUE)...

Holy Macaroly. Has the Peter Principle been fully realized in our Governments; police who shoot first and ask questions later, the road crew who skips over the big potholes and fixes the small ones, the Mayor who smokes dope (choose from many mayors and dopes).

Is there anyone out there, providing a service which we used to be able to rely on, at least that they knew what they were talking about, who is competent or have they all risen to their highest levels of the Peter Principle?

I wonder.

IF there is a reverse Peter Principle, which would be, incompetence starts at the top and trickles down in golden showers of blissful ignorance?

Gordon
