Default Secret verbal memo which made men rich. Update.

I've mentioned it before. Here it is again, with an update.

Background: S. CA, 1970's. Successful CONSULTANT was doing workshops on how to become a successful consultant. He started with this:

(Not an exact quote, but pretty dang close).

"I'm going to start with a TRUTH. Apply it and become as wealthy as you want.

You will know it is the TRUTH, as soon as you hear it. Do you want to hear it?"

"I'm sorry, do you WANT to hear it??" LOUD YES FROM ALL.

Get ready to write, it has five parts.

1. Most people, especially businessmen are NOT as smart as you.

2. These dumber than you businesses will PAY you to help them.

3. HELP them and take their money.

4. IF YOU don't help them and take their money, someone else will take their money.

5. Once you have helped them, get one of their dumber than you friends to help and continue on. IF you don't take their money than you are dumbest of all. "

******
And with a big laugh, he had em in the palm of his hands. Maybe it was because consultants in general, or wannabee consultants THINK they are smarter than most...whatever, it worked.

Truth? Oh, not an argument I want to take on, but since then fortunes have been made by "Consultants" (and they go by many names today) who have HELPED businesses become more successful.

This was a bit before all those DUMMIES books, and IDIOTS books came out too.

Not so much dumb, but it is hard for any small business to keep up with the latest marketing techniques and strategies, all the online, mobile stuff, let alone all the old world ways they face too.

BECAUSE You probably do know more than many small businesses, there is money to be made by sharing (helping) your knowledge and experience with those who haven't been around as much, or haven't been exposed to as much as you have.

Helping small businesses become more successful is the foundation of consultants like Jay Abraham, Dan Kennedy, Gary Halbert and many others who were in S. CA during this time period...hmm, maybe they all took copious notes.

NOW you have the Secret Memo which has made men rich. Use it.

Gordon

Thanks Gordon!

I've made some good money doing consulting work over the past 10 years or so...

Which reminds me of the Third Law of Consulting...

The Third Law of Consulting says:

"Never forget they're paying you by the hour, not by the solution." *

What this means is that, in many consulting cases, you're not actually being paid to solve the problem... You're being paid as someone to blame if anything goes wrong (or if the problem can't be solved)!

And...

If you do solve the problem, the people who hired you will take all the credit!

That's why it's perfectly okay to charge a lot... You're not only there to solve the problem, you're also there to be the scapegoat...

(I've found this is especially true when you're doing consulting work for big organizations!)

In many cases, that's what you're really being paid for!

You can make good money consulting...

And do a lot of good, too...

Thanks Gordon for sharing that!

Best wishes,

Dien

I have to clarify, I think this only really holds if you're doing consulting for big organizations...

In that case, every employee generally has a CYA ("cover your a**") mentality, including those who hired you...

They want you to solve a problem. But they also want you as the "scapegoat" so they can "cover their a**" if required...

This does not hold if you're being hired by an individual, or a small business...!

I've done both...

Best wishes,

Dien

You've had some interesting consulting gigs, because of your Ph.D. background. So, specialists probably face more of that on the corporate levels.

And when there is a committee or group to report to, forgettaboutit....

I have found that the bottom line guy is the best to confer with, he/she makes the decision to hire you, and if you do it right, they know what to expect...and when you exceed their expectations, they happily hand over the moolah to ya.

Some big companies empower their executives to make these kinds of decisions and they will take the responsibility for their choices...which always made working for companies who KNEW and understood, that only 1 in 7 attempts will work (for remote direct marketing efforts), there is a built in understanding. Get the ONE which works, you're golden for at least another 7 or so.

Also, knowing what I know today, wouldn't take anything longer than a 90 day project, and prefer 30 days with results happening quickly. This is also, still, the power of remote direct promotions for small business too, as opposed to the long term of IM or online, with few exceptions.

AND, most smaller businesses want fast results, or a sudden bump and pay to get it too.

Gordon

PS Some (the proverbial, omniscient some) people won't be happy even when the results are exceeded, because they after the fact SEE how simple it really is (but they NEVER think of it).
