Default RIP JOE SUGARMAN,

Another of Harvey Brody's star students, Joe Sugarman, has passed away. Known for his blu-blocker sunglasses and many hall of fame direct response ads for electronic gadgets he is fondly remembered.

I just got an email from Harvey yesterday, alive, well, in perfect health and still doing gangbuster business. He is more involved today than ever. I suggested he share his health secrets with the rest of us.

Some of his mentees have left the bldg, along with Joe Sugarman, Gary Halbert, Dan Kennedy (oops, he snuck back in), Jerry Buchanan while still others are going strong; Ben Suarez, Jay Abraham and more.

I loved the JS&A electronic ads of the 70's, 80's, and his blublocker sun glasses informerical is a classic hall of fame ad too.

I have often spoken and written about the Parade of Life, and I marvel that Harvey Brody is still in front of the parade with his baton showing us the way to financial freedom and independence.

Joe Sugarman was in a class of superstars and his light was brighly shone throughout the world, so bright, in fact...we simply HAD to have us a pair of blublockers.

I hope the next generation of these remote direct marketers leave a legacy as the old timers did and are still doing, like Harvey Brody.

Gordon

Default This is a great article about the late Joe Sugarman

I thought this was a great article about the late Joe Sugarman...

-----

With a knack for narrative, Joseph Sugarman used words to move products

Known for marketing BluBlocker Sunglasses and for sharing his expertise, Mr. Sugarman died March 18 at age 83.

Joseph Sugarman had a thing for stories. He figured out how to tell stories to pique people’s curiosity and get them to buy something.

He sold a game based on the Watergate political scandal. With the Cold War on people’s minds in 1983, he marketed a rudimentary computer game he called the Hungarian Conspiracy, using reverse psychology in the sales pitch. In a long tongue-in-cheek entry he published in his mail-order catalog, Mr. Sugarman said the addictive game was part of a Communist plot to take over the U.S. and that people should send in $29 for it, just so they could warn others about its harm. In his book, The AdWeek Copywriting Handbook, he called the effort only moderately successful but one of his favorite creations.

But wait, there’s more. In 1986, he hit upon the crowning product of his career. Acquiring a patent from a bankrupt company that had done business with NASA, he sold BluBlocker Sunglasses to a receptive public. They block the sun’s blue light to reduce glare. That means you won’t squint so much — so he could even say the sunglasses fight wrinkles. They are still sold.

Default Joe Sugarman & The Hidden Psychology Behind His Sales

Thanks Gordon/Dien,

Joe and I spoke a few times.

And I got some of his BatMan Credit Cards.

The Newspaper Reporter LEFT Out The IMPORTANT Part of What Joe Did.

The Invisible Psychology.

What Makes People TRUST You and Give You Money.

I have Used Joe's PSYCHO IDEAS to Make Clients Moolah when They Had Given Up.

FOR EXAMPLE -

JOE joined a tiny Fraternity in College.

Grew it's membership So Big, So Fast They had no more room.
All without Spending a Dime.

Joe Visited the #1 Dancers at The Men's Clubs surrounding The University. Asked them to ATTEND His Fraternity RUSH Parties in order to

MARKET THEMSELVES to The College Guys.

Joe Said, "Please Dress Like Men."

"COVER UP HEAD to Toe.

"Don't show any skin at all.

The Ladies FELL IN LOVE with this strategy for Attracting New Student Customers - Using Joe's Idea of Wearing Men's White long sleeve Shirt, Tie And a Skirt.

The Girls Attracted SO MANY New Fraternity Members
other Frats COMPLAINED.

(This Idea Helped me Grow Sales at an Art Gallery)

The female Owner Changed the Subject of her 8 foot by 6 foot paintings Too.

She Painted Layer after Layer of SEXY Addiction Scenes.

Bikini Girl bending over a Poker Table Serving Whiskey and Cigars with a Horse Race Track in the BackGround.

Jerri Sold Painting after Painting at 2X the Price.

And had enough moolah to Get Married.

Thanks,
Glenn

Default Joe Sugarman's tongue-in-cheek sex appeal ad...

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for sharing!

While I feel fortunate that I met and interacted with marketing luminaries like John Carlton, Harvey Brody, and the late Gary Halbert... I regret that I never did get to meet Joe Sugarman...

Thanks for sharing his "hidden psychology!"

Joe Sugarman in his book "Advertising Secrets of the Written Word" does mention one ad where he used "sex appeal" to sell an item... in a very tongue-in-cheek way... And it was successful...

This is the ad... "Gold Space Chains"

You can see it full-sized here (and read the text)...

One thing I love about Joe Sugarman's ads is that they were often full of humor!

Thanks Glenn!

Best wishes,

Dien

Default Thanks Dien - Did You Count the # of *NO* Answers in Joe's Ad?

Mil Gracias Dien,

Great Ad Template to create Sales Letters.

I counted FIVE Different Objections or "NO" Answers at the front of the Ad.

Mimicking A REAL - face to face sales call.

Joe the Genius.

I'm going to Borrow this idea.

Glenn

P.S. - Joe had a Best Selling Wall Calendar too.

Dunno where he found the Model.

But she was a TEN.

Most Perfect Tens Can usually See Their Feet to tie their Designer shoes.

But not this gal.
