Default A Difference of Perspective?

The Olympic games are over and life for a lot of Australians will now go back to normal.

Since the closing ceremony I've seen news from the US and news from the UK. And it's interesting to hear their take on Australia. And in particular Australia's performance at the games.

From the US I heard... Australia had a target of 60 medals and fell short. And no mention of place.

From the UK I heard... Australia had the best results they've ever had from an Olympic Games. And came in fourth.

Two different ways the Australian results were relayed to people outside of Australia from two different news sources.

Sour grapes from the US because Sydney was claimed to be the best games ever? Or Joy from the UK as they also did the best they've done for 80 years.

As Joe Friday says... just the facts.

Whatever. It is interesting.

Default Patriotism.

After the ribbing the US received on Roy & HG, I'm not surprised they're upset, if of course that's what they are.

I found this in the paper yesterday and you may have seen it on TV.

Debunking a few myths and telling a few truths.

I don't have a Kangaroo as a Pet,
I don't wrestle with Crocodiles,
And I don't wear cork hats.

I fight wars,
But never start wars.
I would rather make peace.

I can wear my country's flag with pride,
I am the rock,
I am the ocean
I am the island continent.

My brothers are the Smiths, the Wilsons, the Santarellis, the De Costis, the Wongs and the Jagamarras.

I play football without a helmet,
I like beetroot on my hamburger,
I ride in the front seat of a taxi.

I believe it's a prawn, not a shrimp.

I believe the world is round and
Down Under is on top,
I believe Australia is the best address on Earth.

Can you guess what this is an ad for?

Beer......and I agree with every word of it.

Default Hear the roar of that diesel engine!

Yo Michael!

I enjoyed your story on why Men Have Nipples.... Heheh :)

Ahh... I think there were probably plenty of different perspectives from all sorts of places, so I don't know if we can give these national significance.... :)

Though I have heard on the news (just then) that a lot of Americans have decided Australia would be a great holiday destination, since apparently NBC (who had the Olympics broadcast rights in the US) had a lot of stories on many different aspects of Australia....

I just have to say.... Come on down! :)

Your story reminded me of something I read about diesel engines....

When the diesel engine first came out, they were worried about how to promote it. It was more noisy than a gasoline (petrol) engine, and because it was so new, you could only buy diesel fuel from a few different stations.... It wasn't very common....

But by taking a different perspective, they turned the minuses into pluses!

They said something like,

"With a diesel engine, you really can hear your engine roar! You know the power from the incredible roar of your diesel engine...."

and

"Diesel fuel is so special, you can't just by it anywhere. You can only buy it from special stations, since it's a special fuel, not common and run-of-the-mill like everyday gasoline/petrol...."

Well, you get the drift. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining, and I guess part of being a marketer is finding that silver lining.... :) Perspective seems to be a very flexible thing....

Default Roy and HG (local Aussie stuff)....

Hi Richard,

> After the ribbing the US received on Roy
> & HG, I'm not surprised they're upset,

Roy & HG is a local "comedic sporting commentary" duo here in Australia.... I don't think they're really known outside of Australia (though they did briefly do a TV show in the UK).... During the Olympics they had a 2 hour TV show every night, where they'd essentially make fun of various athletes with their commentaries.... It was pretty hilarious. :)

I loved the swimmer from Equatorial Guinea.... He was in a heat with 2 other swimmers, and those other 2 swimmers got disqualified for starting too early. So in his heat he had to swim two lengths of the pool by himself.... and he looked like he was struggling to make it! It makes me feel that if I was from Equatorial Guinea, I could have qualified for the Olympic swimming too.... :)

Their humor is very Australian, and they use a lot of slang (including their own made-up slang), so I think unless you've been in Australia a while it would probably go over your head....

Though some American visitors and athletes did get it, I think.... Basically, once you realize that nothing Roy & HG says is serious, and that they pretty much make fun of everything (both Aussies and also everyone else), you start to "get it" (though it helps to know some Aussie slang too).... :)

Okay, I realize this is irrelevant to most people who read this forum.... since as I said, if you're not in Australia you'd have no clue who Roy & HG are...!

> I like beetroot on my hamburger,

Beetroot on hamburgers is delicious. :)

Hi Michael, Et Al!

****Whenever I hear of commentary like this, (usually I hear it from people who have some sort of inferiority crisis) I point out their focus on lack or scarcity of another is simply showing their own scarcity or lack.

I wonder who the commentator was, and if it was an NBC reporter.....they lost a BUNDLE on their weak coverage of the games, so it does not surprise me they are caught up in how WRONG someone else is, or how someone ELSE (seemingly, in their scarcity filled eyes) fell short.

Do you remember the 1994 Winter Games at Lilliehammer, Norway? I have always enjoyed Norwegians ever since I had a woman named Eva Tine from Oslo on my hallway when I was a Sophomore at University of the Pacific. One night we went and painted "The Rock" as a Norwegian flag....Looonnngggg story.

Anyway, in Lilliehammer the Norwegians were winning so many medals, the organizers were getting embaressed, thinking they were top heavy in the medal count.

Won my heart for sure!

Naturally, they did not compete any less, but I appreciated their concern for the other competitors.

As for me, I am thrilled for all the countries who participated. Hooray for UK and Australia and all the others as well. Looking forward to the next go-around!

With Purpose and Passion,

JULIE
