Interesting thread, if a bit overdone, as most he said/she said things are in the media. Get a life, folks!

Dien, I believe you inadvertently reversed the quote. I was under the impression that it was "Don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle". The quote has been used a lot in sales and copy writing to get folks away from the 'this then that' about the product instead of appealing to the emotional triggers that get people to buy.

Most tests that purport to ferret out people's hidden agenda's regarding race and discrimination are, in themselves, discriminatory. The reason is that most people, at some point in their lives, have been exposed (usually at a very young age) to some sort of prejudicial statements. These statements are often absorbed without conscious thought into one's basic pattern. Later, as adults, we can (and most do) modify the statements to reflect their REAL feelings and the manifestations about others.

When one is under severe pressure, and being mercilessly heckled is surely stressful, these underlying statements often surface, much to the distress and regret of the individual. All the more so if it flies in the face of their true feelings and practices.

For the media, and anyone else, to accept such outbursts as authentic expressions of the self, is done only for the self-serving of the media or the individual who over-reacts.

We're all individuals, with individual backgrounds that are often not of our own choosing. Sometimes these backgrounds conflict with the reality folks actually live. It behooves each of us to cut some slack for an occasional lapse under duress as, one day, the shoe may be on the other foot. Relax!

There are far more critical instances than a mere mention of a word. If you want to get worked up about things, how about all those suffering folks in Africa that don't even have a decent place to lay down and die when they starve to death? Now, that's worth getting irate about! It's all a matter of perspective.
